TOPIC: ARGUMENT142 - The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health reported that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well established that there is a link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in iron. On the basis of the study and the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease.
In this argument, the speaker concludes that the function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease leads to the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease. To support this conclusion, the speaker points out that there is a link between red meat in the diet and heart disease, and quotes a recent study. However, this conclusion suffers from several critical fallacies.
To begin with, the argument simply bases on an unconvincing assumption that the high level iron in the recent study comes from red meat in the diet. Yet, there is no evidence to prove a relation between iron in the study and red meat. Other kinds of food, such as bean and eggs, also contain iron, and it is probably the other food which is rich of iron results in an increased risk of heart disease, but not the cause of red meat. Meanwhile, the iron in red meat, perhaps, is fail to be well absorbed, so that it cannot make a great influence on the risk of heart disease. Until the article shows us an entirely and trustworthy evidence which proves the relation between high level iron and red meat, it is impossible to accept this conclusion.
Even if the iron in the study is actually from red meat, the correlation between red meat and heart disease still has other questionable points. Experience tells us, the flower from opium poppy, when made as opium, can injure one's body function, but it also can make an aesthetic for patients when produced into drugs; And some drink in one's driving always decreases him/her judgments, nevertheless, this can help someone to prevent cold weather and sometimes save ones lives. So, how to use one thing is much more important than what it will do. In my opinion, the improperly cooking ways usually do the harmful influence on one's health. One may wonders, whether they cook red meat by broil, or whether they put much oil in cooking.
In sum, the argument is not well reasoned. To solidify the argument, the arguer would have to make a comprehensive research that there exist an unambiguous link among high lever iron, red meat and risk of heart disease. |
