这些非主流学科帮助规范人们的道德行为   基督教让人们对人友善
2、同时也帮助统治者统治社会，使社会更稳定      古代英国亨利八世与天主教的决裂，用新教维护国家的稳定和独立
3、然而，这些学科同时也阻碍了自然科学的正常发展    如布鲁诺被点事件
4、同时这些学科也妨碍了人们的正常生活  如占卜术要求人们在某些时间不能出门，严重影响了人们的正常工作，对社会有害

As science today is developing more and more quickly, the areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and pshchic and paranormal pursuits have become nonmainstream areas although they are once regarded as holy sciences which can not be disproved. In theory, such areas which are all Platonic have their own principles of coming out, developing and ultimately vanishing as everything does. Although they have actually played a vital role in society in many respects, we can not depend too much on them instead of pursuit of true science.

The most important role that such nonmainstream areas of inquiry have played is to provide human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science. However clever humans are, there are still plenty of problems that can not be answered by mainstream science. The mysterious question that how come the universe or that what is the main purpose for living can not be simply given an convincing reply even with the high development of science today. Then how could ancient people answer these questions? Therefore, people have to turn to such areas as astrology, fortune-telling as well as religion believes for help. For example, under the help of Christianism, people were able to meet their curiocity by telling themselves that there is the God who has created the whole universe as well as human beings.

What is more, such nonmainstream areas have also helped to educate people and thus stabilize the society. For example, God in Christianism tells his disciples to be kind to everybody and pardon their faults, which eases up the conflicts between people who have different interests. The Christians are always be friendly to others and willing to provide assistance for others as their dear God has admonished. By decreasing conflicts between people with seperate interests, the society is hold stablized. Religion could also help doninators to control their nations. Take the religion reform in aicient England for an example, which was executed by Henry Eighth. Before the reform was put into practice, the Catholic which oringinates from Rome had been always made the old kings of England an underdog. Since the occurence of the reform, Henry had controled the nation freely, which later rendered England much more formidable.

However, such nonmainstream areas have also brough about baleful impacts to human beings in several respects, the most important one of which is its harm to the normal  development of real science.  For instance, the steadfast truth insistor Giordano Bruno was burned to death by the contemporary religion governers because his sticking to heliocentricism, which is later proved to be according with the facts. Such afflictions to scientists cumbered the development of science to a huge extent. What is more, such areas have also brought inconvinience to people. There are always requiries that it is not appropriate to go out of the house in the forecast of fortune-telling, which prevents people from normal work. Such cases have undoubtedly brought discommodities for people.

To sum up, nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling,  and psychic and paranormal pursuits played a vital role in society in faith whether in the respect of satisfying human needs or in the respect of preserving the stablization of the society. Since at the same time they brought about baleful impacts to humans, people in the modern society should not rely on these subjects. Instead, the respect and pursuit for true science is what should be actually advacated.
