     What can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society? As for this question, the speaker asserts that arts, such as painting, music, literature, and so forth, serve to the revealment. In my view, I fundamentally agree with the speaker's assertion. However, this revealment , certainly, not belongs to one-to-one relationship.
     The reason why I essentially agree with the speaker has to do with the original resource of arts. We all accept the plain fact that art is based on human daily life. This statement surely reminds us a lot of things. For instance, in early feudal times, all forms of arts, without one exception, are intended to cater to the religious needs or serve to the upper-class's authority. Therefore, in the field of architecture, we had the holy churches and splendid palaces; in the field of painting, also, it is the paintings of religious saints or biblical stories or victories of battles that were handed down generation to generation and are still valuable today. With the time going, nowadays, take the blockbuster films of Hollywood as an example, they do cater to the need of modern people who are stressed up in daily life and eager to relax or have fun.
     However, arts do not always reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of society members. Admittedly, the original resource is invariable; however, human elements are indispensable for arts in terms of that arts are different form other things; after all, any forms of arts are created by human being. Thus, when an artist pays his or her all attention on the inner world of self, how can his or her artistic works reveal the outer society? It is easy to understand this point if we think of Emily Dickinson since the hidden ideas and impulse of the people in her time wouldn't be what expressed in her poems.
     Besides, what can reveal the hidden ideas and impulse is far more than arts. Legislation can be the easiest example to understand this point even though the process of legislation might be long. Just a couple of years ago, China got its new taxation law done. In the new law, the threshold of the individual income tax was raised which undoubtedly reveal the country's concern about its disadvantaged social members and its impulses to build a harmonious society by means of readjusting social income distribution.
     In sum, the assertion the speaker holds do have its valuable merits sometimes because arts are sort of the production of human life; however, if we want to analyze the question completely and deeply, it is important for us to see it in other kinds of perspectives, that is , the arts may differ with the time and the creator, in terms of his or her concentrations; and except arts, there are lots of other social products, like legislation, which can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of the society itself.

     What can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of a society? 个人以为这个题重点在分析art，不在讨论具有后面这个功能的是什么。As for this question, the speaker asserts that arts, such as painting, music, literature, and so forth, serve to the revealment. We all accept the plain fact that art is based on human daily life.这个观点不一定是普遍的。比如题目就强调的是艺术表达深层，可以引申为艺术来自深层。而daily life一般来说是表面。而且这个观点是比较马派的观点。 This statement surely reminds us a lot of things. It is easy to understand this point if we think of Emily Dickinson since the hidden ideas and impulse of the people in her time wouldn't be what expressed in her poems.这还是马克思主义文艺批评的态度。不一定要写别人才是表现社会。一个作家关注自己，也能体现当时的社会风潮。个人和社会是完全对立的吗？难道不是你中有我我中有你吗？这个是艺术的基本问题。如果因为艺术家关注自身，艺术就只能表现个体自身，那就没有人能懂，也就不是艺术了。艺术本身就是社会的。

如果公平的分配可以算做hidden impulse的话，这个例子举得很好。但如果公平也是hidden impulse,那什么是obvious impulse呢？

最近快期末了，咱们组写的和拍的人都少了。楼主的表达能力不容置疑，相当优秀。我在这里探讨的主要是题目的指向，因为ETS是希望参加考试的人能准确而深度理解题目意思的。
楼主可能忽略了题目中一个词，otherwise,也就是说题目限定在艺术领域，讨论在其他情况下（包括法律）隐藏起来的想法和冲动，所以不是讨论能体现ideas and impulses of a society的有哪些。
又因为lz讨论的基础是一些马克思主义文艺批评的假定而非事实，对一些词汇的界定也值得商榷，所以感觉逻辑不是很牢靠。
另外，不太懂human elements和original resource of art是什么意思。
