185. "Scandals whether in politics, academia, or other areas can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

(Bill Clinton, Michael Jordan)
3同时, 我们必须时刻警惕这些丑闻的真实性.因为媒体有其自己的所属公司, 可能为了追求利益的最大化而故意夸大事实,吸引公众的眼球.

With the arrival of information age, technology has made it easier for media to penetrate deeper than ever before into every aspect of the society, increasing the possibility that more and more scandals will be excavated. A public controversy concerning the issue of whether these scandals are useful comes into the limelight. In my opinion, if we can treat scandals, which is truly open out some flaws concealed in the community, objectively, the entire society will be beneficial from it.

It is true that scandals represent some facts that are not available to be seen in other ways to the population since each individual belongs to some certain groups, which contributes he or she instinctively to hide the facts that we so-called “ scandals” out of their own profits. In the realm of politic, the leaders and reformers always commit themselves to advocate or propagandize their party and policy while neglect the internal disadvantages and potential problems existing in the politic system. In this circumstance, scandals are reported to appropriately reveal the shortcoming of the contemporary system, such as the misprision of political officer’s corruption, the abuse of the president’s power and so on. All these scandals will stimulate the government to perfect its power and intendance system. In the academic realm, scandals play a role in exposing the pseudoscience to the public, maintaining the academia’s purify and impulse the development of technology to some extent.

However, sometimes, scandals confuse us and overemphasize on the subjects’ fault instead of their contribution, thus we should evaluate the scandals subjectively and fairly. How can the former U.S. President Bill Clinton’s private affair with Monica Lewinsky overshadow the entire eight years of his administration? Similarly, how can basketball superstar Michael Jordan’s sterling reputation be tarnished by excessive media coverage of his gambling habits, his marital infidelities and the divorce from his wife of 13 years? As it is known to all, during the former president’s administration, the U.S. experiences the fastest economic growth in more than 30 years; the lowest unemployment rates in 30 years; the lowest poverty rates in 20 years; the first back-to-back surpluses in 42 years; the longest period of economic growth in the nation’s entire history, etc. As it come to Michael Jordan,(还没找着呵呵)

Meanwhile, we are supposed to avoid believing blindly in the reports about scandals for the media are profit-based, and their commercial orientation drives them to magnify the fact. Fame and fortune can turn an ordinary individual into a media target where reporters will stop at almost nothing to “dig up dirt” that will sell more newspaper or entice more viewers to watch a television program. It could even been argued that all-pervasive media killed Princess Diana as her car sped away form the privacy-invading cameras of reporters in Paris.

In summary, by the help of the actual, effective, equitable scandals, we learn the world which we habitat from a more explicitly and more specially angle.
