Television is one of the greatest inventions in the 20 century. Its emergence changed modern people's lifestyle and added a way of learning. With the worldwide spread of television, a controversy arises on whether people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. I concede that nowadays reading books is not as popular as it once was; however, the great importance of books can never be ignored, for people can learn much more from reading books than watching television.

Admittedly, the natal born of television brought a new way of learning to human beings. With the help of electricity and satellite, television walked into lives of millions and millions of people and become the most effective way to get information, especially of the latest big events happened in the world. For instance, watching 7 o'clock news with families on television gradually turns out to be a regular custom for many adults. This scene can be seen in almost every home of China. Actually, television can broadcast momentous affairs immediately, such as the 911 tragedy, which shocked a myriad of people who saw the building collapse from television. From those events, people get much deeper recognition to the real life which is rarely provided by books. Besides, by television's funny and vivid characteristics, people can be highly impressed from what is showed on television, therefore, people can remember knowledge taught on television quickly.  For example, the teaching programs are more often than not designed outdoor in the way that can gives children a direct and indelible impression.

However, the negative effects of television are confused people who want depend on television for study. Watching television is a passive progress, which means that audiences are passively accept what programs teach with little contemplation. What's more, for attracting more people, many of television programs, which include violence and sex, are inappropriate for children. Without the proper guidance of parents and teacher, children would imitate bad actions. It is reported that an increasing number of adolescents confessed that their motivation of fighting with each other is just that they felt those people fight on television programs seem very cool. In addition, television programs put more emphasis on entertainment than enlightenment. Many people who are lack of self-control ability are apt to addict to television programs, such as soap series. Many surveys reveal that those extreme concentrating on programs on television can dramatically decline productivity and initiative of workers and students.

As to books, the normal and long-lasting way for learning, it plays a significant role in the human's cognition procedure and has several advantages. First, the progress of reading books, which is always accompanied with thinking meanings of each line in books, can lead to effective learn. An empirical example could illustrate this point. In almost every school of the world, teachers prefer books as their primary teaching materials. While reading books, people could draw lines and add comments, which make the progress of learning more active than watching television. Effective learning is not merely accepting and memorizing other's knowledge, but also thinking how the result comes and whether it is correct under every circumstance. And since different people have distinct learning customs and thinking ways, they can read books in they ways to digest the knowledge of books, from reading word by word to jumping reading. In this case, reading books is much more flexible and useful than watching television.

Second, books, written by experts or experienced people, are more systematic and profound than television. For example, when it comes to laws, there are dossiers of books concerning on civil laws and crime laws and so on, which are complex and intertwined. Books can illustrate those theories and principles deeply and systematic whereas it is hard to express them clearly in television programs, because television programs are limited by length.

Third, books are portable and cheap, which is convenient for people to carry them everywhere with less worry of being steal, while television is heavy and expensive. For these advantages, people can learn everywhere every time, like on the bus when going to work or on the street corner when waiting for people. Additionally, if we do not finish a book at a time, we can read it next time whenever we want. Compared with the stable broadcast schedule of television programs, reading books can provide a comprehensive and integrated learning. The technical skill of reproducible papers is mastered by human beings and beginning to be cheaper and cheaper, so we can enjoy more convenience of learning from books.

In general, although television can give people a more vivid and colorful way to attain information and knowledge than books, considering the harmful effects of television and the advantages of books, books are still the main choice of people to learn.
