题目:ARGUMENT140 - The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

In this argument, the author recommends that Professor Thomas should receive arhe increase of salary by 20 percent and a promotion to Department Chairperson. To validate the claim, the arguer cites an evidence that Proffessor Thomas's classes are among the the largest at the university, which indicates that she is popular with students. In addition, the arguer points out the fact that the money she brought to the university in reasearch grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years.Based on such evidence the arguer infers the following assumption that Professor Thomas does well in research. However Moreover, the arguer assumes that without such a raise and promotion,Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University(ECU).However this argument is falwed in several critical respects.
In the first place, the arguer simply assumes that Professor Thomas is welcome with students ,which basd on the evidence that her classes are among the largest at the university.Yet it is entirely possible that her classes are all 必修course for all students, and possible that the coursed taught by her are easier to pass than other couses. Each possibility which is not mentioned in this argument will undermine this assumption that Professor is popular with students..
In the second place, the arguer fails to equate Professor Thomas's reasearch ability with the money that brought to the University in reasearch grants by her.As we know ,the money which is more than Professor Thomas 's salary is not much enough for reasearch grants in the university.Even though the money she brought to the university in reasearching is a large number in each past two years the arguer fails to establish a causal relationship between the researching ability and money brought by her.Perhaps Professor Thomas are just good at looking for the investers who will cooperate with the university. Under these evidence the assumption that Professor Thomas is excellent in researching is dubious.
Even if the ProfessorThomas 's teasearching and reasearching ability have been demostrated the assumption that without such a raise and promation,Professor Thomas will leave ECU for another cllage is unfounded. No evidence is supplied by the argument to indicate that Professor teaching in ECU is in order to gain more money and higher reputition.Perhaps Professor Thomas devotes her career to teaching just for great interest,or perhaps to be a teacher is her dream.,In absence of such evidence, the author simply can not draw any firm conclusions basd on such assumption.
In sum,the recommendation lacks credibility ,since the evidence cited in the argument does not stongly support what the arguer maintains. To strengthen the argument ,the author would have to provide more evidence to demonstrate Professor Thomas actually has teaching and researching ability. To better evaluate the argument , we would need more information concerning that without raising salary and promotion professor Thomas would leave for other university.
