Only according to observation of people's appearance and behavior can we tell about a society's ideas and values? The author claims so, and including that the way people look, dress, and act shows their attitudes and interests. However, in my point of view, we can rarely judge people's attitudes and interests accurately just by how they look like, and it is difficult to tell ideas and values of a society through observing the appearance and behavior of its people.

I concede that the way people look, dress, and act may reveal their attitudes and interests, because sometimes those conducts are dominated by their ideas and values. A person, who is a celibate or has been depressed by marriage, always would not be found the ring on his or her finger, artists always maintain long hairs, besides, and some people who always drive motorcycles liking a wind in the streets with loud sounds are easily recognized as rock musicians by civilians. We can make these judgments which are certainly based on how people look, dress and act.

However, considering that we can catch attitudes and interests of individuals accurately just through observing the way they look, dress, and act, always is inadequate. So many people whose characters are so introverted that their genuine natures are hardly observed by other people. For example, you might would see an introverted people plays basketball, then think he or she favors to do that, but the fact is just in order to cater to his or her friends who like basketball. Moreover, well dressed people would not must be a well educated man, and poor appearance of people might make great contribution to society. More and more people who have taken accomplishment always have themselves looked common.

Furthermore, actually, people's appearance and behavior just are belong to themselves, and society, as a container of individuals who have various ideas and values, should has a synthetical, tolerant ideas and values. People's appearance and behavior always take a negative role for telling a society's ideas and values. For instance, you might be similar with a group of people who always drink, smoke, fight, even steal and rape, of course you would be depressed about these conducts and evaluate the ideas and values of society through contacting with those people. Nevertheless, are those such as drinking, smoking, fight, stealing, and rape real ideas and values of our society? One group can not represent the whole. Also, are you sure you can get people's true attitudes and interests accurately as an observer? If not, you would come to an illusive conclusion of society's ideas and values.

In addition, although sometimes people's appearance and behavior illustrate their attitudes and interests, in order to tell society's ideas and values, one should enter into the society and spend a long time feeling them.

In summary, the speaker's assertion is too specious and simplified. People, as an essential element of society, impact society all the time. Deeply enter into the society, is an efficient way to get a society's ideas and values.
