4.The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site.
"Of the two leading real estate firms in our town-Adams Realty and Fitch
Realty-Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In
contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams'
revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home
sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed
with Adams sell faster as well: ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch
and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another
home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you
want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams."

The argument recommends that if you want to choose a estate firm to sell your home quickly and at good price, you should use Adams. Because of the two leading real estate firms, Adams is clearly superior. The recommendation is based on the following reasons: Adams has more real estate agents. And with higher average home sales price, Adams’ revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch. The evidence shown by the author that he sold his house quicker by Adams contributes to the author’s opinion. At the first glance, the argument seems apparent and appealing. However, through clearly examining the author’s reasoning, we can find many fallacies.
First of all, the number of the real estate agents doesn’t represent that Adams is better. There are many other factors influencing the reputation and power of an estate firm. The education level of the staff, the ambition and innovative strategies taken by the leader, the way the CEO runs the company, the working spirit of the salesman, the efficiency of the staff are all superior to the number of estate agents for a company. So it is unwise to compare the two companies simply by the number of agents. If the author wants to prove what he said, he has to list all the factors above and make a comprehensive conclusion.
Secondly, part--time agents doesn’t mean that they can’t work better than full—time workers. The ability of workers is more essential for a company. And we have reason to believe that part-time workers have more relationship. Because they work in different places and know various people. Thus, they can sell more houses than full—time workers. If the writer wants to prove what he said, he has to present evidences to deny the superiority of the part—time workers.
What is more, the average home sales price can’t demonstrate anything. The area of the house and the quality of the house makes the average price different. So it is unwarranted to say that A has the ability to sell an analogy house at a higher price.
The example the author cited also has some unreasonable factors. The author cites an example of his own which took place ten years ago and one happened last year. In most instances, this is an unwarranted analogue for the simple reason that things rarely remain the same over extended periods of time. As we know, many factors should be taken into the consideration, such as the changing of the area of the land in this city and the changing of the population.
In conclusion, it is too rough to say that A is better than F. The author ignores many essential factors that influence the conclusion. To strengthen the conclusion, the author should give more evidence about the above possibilities.
