------题目------
In order for any work of art—whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song—to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.
------正文------
I fundamentally disagree with the speaker insofar as the value of a piece of art has nothing to do with whether it is understandable or not. To gauge whether a piece of art has merit or not, one should firstly clarify the essence and the function of it, and the standard by which people evaluate the work of art.
Although today the word art usually refers to the visual arts. The concept of what art is has continuously changed over centuries. Perhaps the most concise definition is its broadest------arts refer to all creative human endeavors. Man use arts to convey their emotion and imagination, to reflect their views of the world, to outlet their ideas about the relations between this world and human beings. Put the definition into simple words, the arts is the organic product of knowledge and emotion. It reflects the realistic and spiritual world of the human beings.
Firstly, whether a piece of art is a masterpiece is determined by its functions. One of the functions of the arts is that they provide pleasure. The most important function of songs, defined as classics, popular, or folk songs, is to entertain their audience, make them joyful, or remind them of the good old days. If a song can provide its listener sense of happy or other resonance, it can be deemed as a good art. Another function of the arts is that they present us with insight into what is eternal and universal. The art is born from society and an excellent piece of art should reflect the natures, values and trends of the society. John Denver, born in New Mexico in 1943, was a popular musician of the 1970's. His contributions to American culture extend far beyond the tender music. He is best known for, but stretched from environmentalism and philanthropy to a hearty interest in space songs. It was his ability to connect with listeners of all nationalities, ages that make John Denver one of the most beloved and influential recording artists of the 20th century. One of his best known songs ‘Take Me Home, Country Road’ is famous all over the world. Therefore, a good art is the art that can invoke the common thought of the people in spite that whether it understandable or not.
Secondly, when we pursue the value of a piece of art, we should make clear that who judge the arts------the maker, or the audiences, the viewers or anyone else. One of the essential points is that any kind of art, whether film, literature, sculpture or a song, are created by individuals, thus the arts must transfer what the maker want to express. The examples of Van Gogh and Salvador Dali can support this point of view. At the time of Van Gogh , few people can understand Van Gogh’s labeled master pieces, the Sunflowers. It is so strange that Van Gogh paint in such an unusual way of using colors. This piece of art presents us such a drab and flabby picture. But when taking Van Gogh l's experience into consideration, we will surprised to find out the confused and despond inner world of Van Gogh himself. Salvador Dali, who remains one of the best known artists of the modern era, due to his flamboyant personality and instantly recognizable painting style. He painted his products in a meticulous technique that impact a dream-like land scrapes, which are often filled with strange objects, such as crutch holding up the old women that graces one of his best known works. Although the works of Van Gogh and Dali are uneasy to understand, it can not prevent their works of arts to be viewed as valuable.
In conclusion, whether a work of art is understandable to most people or not, is not a decisive factor to a valuable work. The most important element that makes a piece of art unique is the essence and the function of the arts ---- what the arts want to reveal and what kind of thoughts the producer want to convey. |
