103. "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
只有在历史研究与我们的日常生活相关的前提下，历史研究才有价值。

History: the study of past events
1、  有些人认为同样的事实和观念，对于这一部分人来讲极具价值，对那一部分人就可能毫无意义。既然某一命题究竟有没有“用”，不同的人会有截然不同的判断，那么历史研究者应该根据谁的标准来判断呢？如果历史研究惟一的目的就是古为今用，那么在研究之前首先必须确定研究命题的有用与否。但是，在进行研究以前是很难正确判断哪个命题有用，或一个命题的哪一方面的实际功用更大。而且，随着人的认识与社会需要的变化，有用和无用也完全是相对的。从来没有绝对的有用，也没有绝对的无用。敦煌文献在发现之初，国内收藏家注意的多是书法优美的手书经卷，对账册、契约一类不屑一顾。当年敦煌文献自甘肃运往北京的途中，沿途官员纷纷盗取，都是挑选这类经卷。而今天人们无疑早已意识到，后者在历史研究中对复原当时生活实态具有更大的价值。
2、  研究历史的目的：学习历史，可以让我们知道以前发生的事，指导我们在现实中如何解决问题和避免错误。从而让我们的民族和国家得到不断的发展。如果历史研究与日常生活无关，就无法指导现实问题，失去了研究历史的目的。
3、  学习历史是慰藉人们现实生活中的感情的一种方式。抑郁惆怅者在历史中找到知己，报国无门者通过历史来借古讽今；知足常乐者在历史中安贫达命，踌躇满志者以历史来抒发意向。不同性格的。不同命运的人都在历史中不同程度地找到了自己的影子。

The study of history, definition of which is the study of past events, has its vital function in every nation. Even though plenty of people consider that the study of history is completely different from the application of history and thus has no use in association with our daily lives, in my point of view, the study of history plays a significant role in our daily lives, which endows it with the true value.

Admittedly, there is a kind of viewpoint that regarding the total difference between study of history and application of study, which is largely related to practical use of history in our daily lives, the study of history has nothing to do with our daily lives. The study of history, just as its name implies, is merely to learn historical events and their aftermaths, which remains the same no matter whom it is executed by. However, when one wants to dig out how much an event values, it is covered in the area of the application of history, which is completely different when it is executed by different people. For example, the magnificent art treasures found in Dun Huang in China was famous for its valuable scriptures with dainty calligraphy once they are discovered, while the contracts and account books were scorned to research in. however, they are accentuated nowadays because of its revealing of temporal lives. If the study of history has its value only when it is related to practical lives, people will be bewildered about whether it is worth to study since it varies between different people and different periods.

However, the basic purpose of study of history, to my way of thinking, is to provide instructions for realistic problems through the knowledge of past events. After studying of history, we get knowledge about facing the similar problems, what will the aftermaths be if the similar solutions are taken as historical events reveal. In this way, we can avoid committing similar mistakes which can bring about more serious problems. Instead, we can refer to past events for help to find out most perfect solutions for problems we are facing today. Through such actions, we can solve our practical problems more properly and aptly. Moreover, experience distilled in the study of history provides us with more wisdom and sapience which can expands our ability and perfects us.

In addition, the study of history supplies our feelings with appeasements by means of providing similar case with us. People who are content with the realistic lives in peace find those who enjoyed and sang for their lives in the history, which gives them more happiness; People who lack the opportunities to put their abilities to good use find those who lamented the unfairness of the society in the history; people who are ready to do something proudly find those who expressed the ambition in the history. With knowledge of history, we find confidants who have similar feelings as we do and get placated by the study of history.

To sum up, I strongly contend that the study of history should associate itself to our daily lives to accomplish its basic functions. It means that during the study of history we ought to use historical viewpoints to solve realistic problems. At the same time, the study of history also provides ease of our feelings.
