ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."

Is it feasible to find some reference from the past? The speaker claims that we could find little to serve as the guidance for current life since we live in a more complex and new society. In my point of view, I concede that the situation we are facing with today is somehow different, or to some extent more complicated than ever before, however, people always could get some benefits from tracing back to the history.

Admittedly, as the accelerating development of human knowledge and technology, we have to deal with much more complicated problems than our ancestors did. In the realm of science, we have broadened our spectrum from the gross environment to the microscopic world, or from the planet we live to the outer space. But such development doesn't promise us to learn more about the world we live. On the contrary, we find ourselves more vulnerable to the diseases, natural catastrophe or even to the aftermath of what we bring about. Our ancestors had never been into the dilemma of being entrapped by the technology, like crisis brought by air-conditioning, automobiles and petrochemistry, which was thought to promote living conditions but finally destroy the environment. Or never could we get some idea from the history to prevent the new plagues originated from the rain-forests or other primitive area. The vast difference of the life we have today renders less possibility to find the ideal prototype to solve newly emerged problems.

While in the socio-political realm, current trend of globalization not only changes our socio-economic activity, but also brings us a new era if concerning to those persistent social problems. We are in a more complicated financial system so that any dysfunction of a site in this chain would trigger a far-reaching crisis. No one would forget that Southeast Asian economic crisis deeply interfere the world economy, even the stock markets thousands miles away, for instance, New York and London market digits slumped critically in the following months. And it took years for the world economy to get revived. Neither did our ancestors experience such broad ethnic conflicts escalating these years all around the world. Former strategy, like economic bully or even marshal interference, would do little to assuage the situation, but raising the tension than ever before.

Nevertheless, we could find the historical root of most conflicts innate thus provides us a shortcut to solve the problem. Take the issue of persistent Israeli-Palestinian conflicts as an example. The outbreaks, like 'Lands for Peace', we got during last decades were just originated from those ancient treatises made between Christians and Muslims in 11th century. Or in the realm of science, any new science research conducted today is under the basic thought of Aristotle's logical way of thinking. Basic knowledge is the pith that transmitted from generation to generation, by which we could find the way out even for the most challenging problems.

In my final analysis, our current life is quite so different to that of the past which makes us puzzles about finding out the effective way to deal with them. Although little direct information could be obtained from the history, basic principles, such as the logical way of thinking for academic studies, humanity and democracy perspective for political and even geographical problems, should not be overlooked. We could hardly illustrate an example for varieties of questions we might confront with, but similar issues in the history could provide the clues for us to deal with more complicated problems.
