1The following appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature's Way, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
"Previous experience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas where residents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should therefore build our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents. Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five years ago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a new generation of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participate in a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regular exercise at an early age."
The arguer claimed that they should build their next new store in Plainsville. To support this, he provided the report according to Plainsville merchants that sales of running shoes and exercise clothing are at all-time highs as well as the fact that the local health club has more members than ever, and the weight training and aerobice classes are always full. The arguer also assumes that children will participate in the "fitness for life" program. However, the conclusion the arguer has drawn is not so wise that the Nature's Way company may not be able to earn much profit from the new chain store to be built in Plainsville.
In the first place, the fact that Nature's Way's previous stores are most profitable does not necessarily mean the store to be built in Plainsville can earn a lot of money. A store's profit depends on many factors , such as the original cost of building the house, the relationship between supply and demand, and the quality of service. So the previous experience may not realize in Plainsville. Also, the residents' high concerns with leading healthy lives can't inevitably bring profit taking into account the possibility that there may be other competitors selling the same production which has already occupied the market at high percentage. A simple decision of setting up a new store may lead to bad sellings.
Besides the previous successful experience, the local situation of body building can't support the claim, either. If the local health club five years ago received only ten students and the number today grow to merely 20, the fact that it has more members than ever proves true but virtually the market of fitness program does not enlarge much. Moreover , exercise is the most effective way to stay in shape according to scientific research. As a result, residents in Plainsville probably only have interests in doing sport but not care much about healty eating, which reduce sellings of Nature's Way.
Finally, the assumption that children become potential consumers also undermine the conclusion. As we all know, children like playing games best. They care little, if they do, about what they eat as long as the food are delicious or good-looking. Neither do they well understand the importance of health, which means they generally don't buy healthy-related production. What's more, parents usually do not bother to pay children on fitness programs specially in that most people hold that the best way for children to grow healthily is to join in the games. Perhaps children go to toys shops or sport facility stores more than health-related ones.
In a sum, in order to make a decision of opening a new chain store, many factors have to be considered like a best location, an market investigation, and a precise budget. More survey and deep consideration for Nature’s Way of building a new branch are still needed. After all, a store without enough market and consumers can not make so much profit as pay.
