144, ‘It is the artist, not the critic,’ who gives society something of lasting value. A person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
The artist creates art like novels, films, music, paintings and so force, and the critic evaluates them. Whose contributions are more significant? The speaker claims that the artist's contributions are greater and it is them who give society something of lasting value. I fundamentally agree insofar as the artist serves as the creator of works of art. Nonetheless, the role of the critic is also indispensable and his contributions should not be simply neglected.
When we discuss who give society something of lasting value, we should firstly propose a clear definition about the lasting value. Does the lasting value mean the value which can be inherited and will spread from one generation to another? If the answer is positive, it is definitely the artist who should be honored as the creator of the lasting value, just because novels, films, music and paintings are all created by them and these works seem to be perpetual and the main way to impart and inherit our value. Just imagine that you are reading a novel about a hero. What can you learn from the novel? Whether the novel has changed some of your belief and ideal? From the hero, the nature and the signification of life are revealed which tell us that the ultimate goal of a human being lived in the world is not to pursue comfortable and material living but to make the world more beautiful. The ambition to change the world, the braveness to challenge evil and the preparation to sacrifice are all characters of a hero described in the novel, and these characters have been categorized into lasting value. Through reading this novel, we are acquainted with some parts of lasting value. In fact, this process is the very way to preserve and spread lasting value.
However, the critic has his own contributions especially in nowadays information exploding era. Though values are preserved and spread by works of art, its function would fail when too much information is available. To avoid be immersed by that huge information, we cannot afford to read all works and so judging which one deserves our precious time and energy is important. Unfortunately, this task has been beyond common people's ability; moreover, leaving this task to every individual is also inefficient. A more efficient and practical way is to depend on our critic who will evaluates works for us. The critic scans a lot of works and put them into corresponding categories. Take films for instance. The critic divides all of them into separate kinds, such as comedy, action, horror, family, science fiction and so on. Different kinds of films reflect different parts of lasting value. Then we can refer to comedy films when we want to relax and enjoy humor, action films meet our needs if the appreciation of heroism is our aim, horror films can provide us adventure, family films will reveals the nature of love, and science fiction films stimulate our curiosity and honor the exploration of unknown area. Thanks to the critic, we are released from the puzzlement of choosing when we face too many films.
Moreover, except for the work of categorizing, by publishing their judgments and perspectives the critic also assists us to better understand the values lying behind the works of art. From their professional standpoints, they point out the motivation of the works, provide some background knowledge, clarify the values presented in the works, and even commend some further materials. Indeed, a lot of works relate to particular cultures or experiences which are essential to our comprehensive and profound understanding. For example, without knowing the faithful love between Liang Shanbo and Zhu yingtai, you cannot really appreciate the plangent rhythm of Hua Die, a famous Chinese traditional music, and the aspiration for free love; without knowing the miserable and unbending life of Beethoven, you cannot really appreciate the heroic style of his Symphony No. 5 in C Minor and the struggle spirit to fate.
In sum, while the artist creates art, the critic helps us to choose and understand art. So it is hasty to claim that it is the artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. Indeed, it is the cooperation between the artist and the critic that gives, maintains and spreads lasting value.

The speaker claims that the artist's contributions are greater and it is they who give society something of lasting value. I fundamentally agree insofar as the artist serves as the creator of artworks. Nonetheless, the role of the critic is also indispensable and his contributions should not be simply neglected.
Undoubtedly, it is the artist who should be honored as the creator of the lasting value, just because novels, films, music and paintings are all created by them and these works seem to be perpetual and the main way to impart and inherit our value. The Declaration of Independence, drafted by Jefferson Thomas, handed down the aspiration of equality and democracy from one generation to another; Forrest Gump, a famous film directed by Robert Zemeckis, highly honored personal struggle; The March of Brave Volunteers, Chinese national anthem composed by Tian Han, inspired numerous Chinese people to revolt against aggressor; and it is just Picasso's Guernica that continuously reminded people with the agonies and atrocities of war and preciousness of peace. All these examples illustrate the point that the artist creates artworks and artworks in turn create lasting value.
However, especially in these days, when numerous artworks are continuously created, the critic is necessary in order to allow common people to efficiently and properly assimilate mass of information available to us. Though values are preserved and spread by artworks, its function would fail when too much information is available. To avoid being immersed, we cannot afford to read all works. But at times, common people lack ability to choose appropriate artworks they really need; moreover, leaving this task to individual is also inefficient. A more practical and efficient way is to depend on our critic. On the one hand, the critic scans a lot of works and put them into corresponding categories. As a result, our choice has been narrowed to a certain category which is easier. On the other hand, the critic evaluates and sensors artworks as a filter. Just like excellent artworks benefit lasting value, artworks full of violence or religious craze are definitely damaging to it. So under the critic’s effort, true lasting value is protected.
Moreover, the critic also assists us to better understand the values lying behind the artworks. From their professional standpoints, they point out the motivation of the works, provide some background knowledge and clarify the values presented in the works. Indeed, a comprehensive and profound understanding calls for knowledge about particular cultures or experiences involved in works. For example, without knowing the faithful love between Romeo and Juliet, one cannot really appreciate the plangent rhythm of the tragedy of Shakespeare and the aspiration for free love; without knowing the miserable and unbending life of Beethoven, one cannot really appreciate the heroic style of Hero Symphony and the struggle spirit to fate.
In sum, without the artist, lasting value lacks carrier and then cannot be presented and disseminated. Without the critic, common people trend to lose in the ocean of artworks and cannot efficiently and properly learn lasting value. Thus, while we need the artist to create lasting value, the critic is equally important.
