Do nonmainstream areas play a important role in society by satisfying human needs?
As the speaker asserts, the phychological  and physical requirement of people are content with these areas of inquiry as astrology , fortune-telling and others. I agree that  such nonmainstream areas of inquiry,in some sense, are effective in the fields that mainstream science is unable to reach, especially in psychological aspect, however, it is harmful to exaggerate its effectiveness.

For one thing, mainstream science is not as powerful as completeing any  problem. Reviewing the development history of science, I am surprise to its splendid achievements , but people should not neglect that its developing period is not long comparing with the nonmainstream areas'.  Many natural phenomena, such as mental science and astronomical phenomena, could not be explained by scientific principles, nevertheless, the masses would like to know why and how these phenomena take place, and the ways they search answers are unmainstream areas of inquiry. As is known to us, the history of astrology could trace back to the begining of human society, and it has its own completed theoretical systems, which is the reason why many people trust it. With the development modern science and technology, I assert that more and more people will serve scientific theory as the methods of studying  nature and human society, because under the guiding of  its experimental principle any conclusion could be validated, rather than the astrology or any other nonmainstream theory could not be repeated.

For another, choices facing  human make people resort to astrology or other nonmainstream theories. Human could not go back to the past, similarly, could not go forward to the future, that is, we only live in present, which is determined by theoretical physics principle. Actually  we could not know what will happen in future, which make us anxious when we make decisions, such as which college should child go to, which course should I choose, which corporation should I work in, and so on. If there is a sort of supernatural power could help me choosing a right answer, I could do something I really would like to do. When someone tell me that maybe astrology is a effective approach, it is no doubt that I will try. But in fact no one and no theory could help people to predict future, and the only way we could choose is making a decision by ourselves after  considering it seriously.

Admittedly, nonmainstream areas of inquiry satisfies certain  human needs , so at least it seems to me, their contributions appear in some aspects. Take astrology for example, it correlate the position and motion of celestial bodies with destiny of human. Obviously, it is violated to the scientific principle , but it is also the beginning of modern astronomy. Another example, chmistry, one of the modern science, comes from alchemy. These examples reveal a fact that to some extent nonmainstream areas of inquiry accelerate the development of modern scince.

In sum, although there are no concrete evidences could demonstrate that astrology and any other nonmainstream theory are validated, in some sense  we have to acknowledge their social effect, and studying them as a social phenomenon.
