"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
Were the most significant events and trends in history made possible by the famous few individuals or by groups of people? Some people agree the former and the others insist that the latter is right. In my opinion, both of them are correct answers. To better study history, focusing on individuals and mass are both indispensable.
Reading through the history, we can find a nature law that the development of the society during whole history is propelled by people and most significant events and trends in history always showed aspiration of one group of people. From slavery society to capitalistic society, any reformation of society system is caused by a class of people, not by any individual. For example, the success of industry revolution is because of the capitalistic class’ strong aspiration [the strong aspiration of the capitalistic class] to the benefits ,not due to the idea of any one. Even in old society, the politic power is owned by few people, they cannot make any decision wholly arbitrarily without considering the willing of the other people who are the largest proportion of population and represent different classes. With the time going on, more and more power is owned in the hand of multitude, and history events in modern history showed the aspiration of one group of people more directly and effective than that before, such as war of independence, which represented American people the aspiration and love to the freedom. Thereby, to study the history better, we need to know more information about the population at that time.
Admittedly, mass made great effect in the history events, however the importance of few famous individuals cannot be neglected too [either]. If people are the foundation of the events and trends, the famous few acted as leader or helmsmen in history. Great individual and groups of people are just like matches and piles of wood. Matches ignite wood and wood flares brightly. With the help of people, these famous few who are called hero in history successfully accomplish the willing of one group of people they represent. Washington enhanced the democratic revolution of the United Stats, Einstein discovered lights and brought light to human, and Bill gates accelerate the development of IT industries. Without these great people our world may be not the world today. Learning these people can help people better understand the process of the development of society.
On the other hand, the history places too much emphasis on individuals does not mean they neglect the group of people who make great effect in the history events. Oppositely, the written few are used as the representation of whole class of people. We have to admit that there is no possibility to write every person in history, so the few of these people are selected to show the whole class of people. They are acting as a mirror of their age to represent the group of people with same culture background, think and feel with them.
To sum up, the famous few and whole group of people make different effect in the significant events and trends in history. Lacking of the aspiration and striving of general people, revolution or reform will not success. And without the leading of some hero and the innovation of scientists, the people do not have effective way to make their will go to facts and the process of events may last longer time than reality.
