ISSUE 51 Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student. 44min 543 words How to define an effective education? Does an effective education means the educatee well fitted into a job and can sustain his/her own material wants? Or does it mean the receiver of an adequate education will be more confident and happy in his/her later life? The answer to this question determines what an effective will be. The speaker's opinion of a specifically designed education has the potential of satisfying the two criterions mentioned above. By studying each student’s innate ability and weakness, where does his/her interests lie, specialists on education is quite possible to come out with a dedicate plan about how to implement his/her education. As the education plan is unique for each educatee, it is highly flexible and can be altered to cater for each small change of the educatee's ability and interest. This means that when a potential Newton finds out that his true craving is for the philosophical and mathematical structure of the whole universe, he will not bog down in the law school and waste his youth time. However, as we are facing millions of new students enrolled into school in U.S, let alone the world, it seems hard to find enough competent speciallists to design the education for each educatee.(You can not expect anyone to do this job because the complexity and importance for each individual and the whole society.) One must concede that if the specialist in charge of designing a child's education is not competent or too busy to interact with the child, the result will be out of control. The real potential of an educatee will be ignored, and most people may just want to go an easier way and cause an imbalanced knowledge structure of the whole society. Another practical problem with the specific designed education is that it may cause waste of the resources. Admittedly, in spite of the difference of the educatees, there are some basic knowledge to be imparted, emotions to be cultivated, skills to be developed. Any citizen in a democratic society should be raised to cherish his/her freedom and feel the obligation to defend it when necessary. Basic mathematical skills are essential for nearly every modern citizen to become a useful element in the workforce. Trying to make a different education for each educatee instead of offering the basic education for a bigger group is economically unwise and more important, unnecessary. You can't make much difference to teach how to perform 3 times 5 or Washington is one of the founding fathers, after all. But we should not go too far in this practice, as the education’s level goes up, more and more diversification becomes desirable. Different talents should be treated in corresponding ways. To make the education achieve its goal, the sacrifice of efficiency by making special designs for each educatee is justifiable. In sum, it is true that a specifically designed education will be truly effective if it is carried out adequately. Yet the amount of work it will require seemly makes it unpractical and may even cause compromise in the quality of education. To ensure the efficiency of the education system, the basic education should be more or less the same for each educatee and the uniqueness should take part in later and higher educations.
