The study of an academic discipline alters the way we perceive the world. After studying the discipline, we see the same world as before, but with different eyes.
------正文------
Considerable academic disciplines change the way we perceive the world, while many disciplines created new ways to sense the world and some others have little effect on the way we perceive the world.
We can draw a new explanation of the same world we can touch through studying academic discipline. Copernicus studied Aristotle's theory that the earth was the center of the universe, and then he found it was groundless then proposed a new theory: the sun was the center of the universe. He claimed the earth was involving the sun all the time. Though it was rejected and abandoned by the contemporary authority, we still had a chance to progress in the long and infinite road for exploring the essence of the universe. The world was still the some world we could see before, but our viewpoints about the world had changed a lot, even too greatly to accept. To this point, we can say we see a same world as before but by studying the present academic principle and revised the old theory we can perceive the world more correctly.
However, in some occasions, studying of an academic discipline help us to better understand the world without altering the way we perceive the world. Because the world is not the uniform world we can touch before. In other words, new academic principles or theories, opens a window to looking a new world. For example, we can not examinant bacteria and virus until the new essential skill and instrument were invented; we can not watch the remote stars until we have telescope, including electric telescope as the Hubble Telescope; we can not know the situation below hundreds of meters in deep sea until we have vehicles like sub-marine. Strictly speaking, the world is not the former world we ever touch. We have no idea about bacteria unless we can discover them with our eyes. To this point, some academic theories give us other new eyes on the world. Other weird and diverse worlds can be perceived by human being. Therefore, we can not insist the world is the same world as we perceived before, though the world is the same world.
To some extent, some abstruse academic disciplines are too abstract to be accepted by the public. They have little effect on their progress of perceiving of the world other than some experts in that field or scientists in that faculty. As a result, the way the whole human beings perceive the world has not been altered. I can say Einstein theory is stranger to most of people all over the world, though they may hear of it. While scientists have been inspired by the great theory, especially during the studying process, the public are independent with it. In this point, we exaggerate the effect of studying an academic discipline.
In conclusion, some process of studying academic disciplines can alter the way we perceive the world; some one can add to our present way we perceive the world; and some one can do little to the way we perceive the world. |
