Technology has played an important part in the development of human history and human society.
Someone acclaims that technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics, which in my opinion has overemphasized the effect of technology in human society.

There is no doubt that technology influences the social customs and ethics. Social customs are the usual, generally accepted and long established way of behaving or doing things, including nearly every aspect of people's life. Social customs will gradually change according to the development of technology. For example, in modern-day, it has become more and more common for people to spend some of their leisure time in traveling, which can help to relax themselves and broaden their experience. Traveling all round the world was only made possible after the emergence of ship transport. In the days without automobiles, people spent large amounts of time on the road. A journey across two cities might consume one month. Nowadays with the emergence of cars, trains and planes, a journey across Pacific Ocean only takes 12 hours by plane, which would be a miracle in 17th century. The changes in mode of transport have greatly influenced the customs of people going out, which save people time and make life more convenient. Now it is commonplace for people to travel around the world.

Technologies also have a profound effect on social ethics. In recent days, there has been many issues involving the development of technology and social ethics. For example, the arguments about that whether the clone technology can be used to clone human have always been concerned, especially after the birth of Dolly. People concern about how to face two men with the perfectly same genes and how to prevent the technology of clone from being used by bad men. There is doubt whether the society is able to treat the clone people equally with others. All the questions require answers. Similarly, other state-of-the-art technologies, including test-tube baby and transgenic foods, which could bring a breakthrough in Medicine, on the other side also induce the widespread controversy and attention.

However, technology, which improves people's life and raise kinds of social problems, is not the only factor to determine the social customs and ethics. Religion is another significant factor to influence human society.
In some Muslim countries, women wear yashmaks when they are in public. All Muslim don't eat pork for in their brief pigs are symbol of lazy and dirtiness. Their dressing and eating customs are the results of their briefs. Other factors, such as climates, geographic characters and history influences, all influence social customs and ethics.

During the long human history, different events happened, different briefs established. Various factors determine social customs and ethics, with technology being one of them.
