------题目------
The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.
------正文------
The speaker asserts that the way people look, dress and act reflect the a society's ideas and values. I partially agree with the speaker, yet internationalization and the development of new technology sometimes counteracts those reflections. In order better comprehend the ideas and values of a society, we should also focus on other aspects, including the history, politics, and arts.
To begin with, the way people look, dress and act, at some sense, indeed reveals their attitudes and interests. And in some cases, it is quite easy to judge from people's behavior and appearance to conclude the ideas and values of a society. Refer to the way people dress first. Germans always wear formal dresses in public places, for example, at workplaces or at schools. Correspondingly, they are famous for obeying the rules and moral strictly. Fresh people is sometimes allowed to wear casual clothes at workplace, even slippers are permitted in some cases, which is quite similar to their romantics. For Chinese, women wear cheong-sums a lot, which reflect their shyness. Let's turn to people's behavior. In Arab countries, people have to keep a physical distance between each other in a conversation, which shows that people there are not willing to be too intimate with each other. In some western countries, only very close friends can be invited to go to the other's home, which informs that protecting their private life is very informant for people there. All examples above reveals that people's behaviors and appearances can be a sign to reflect a society's ideas and values.
On the other hand, internationalization and the advance of new technologies sometimes counteracts with those social signs and makes people all over the world pursue the fashion. Turn to the effects of internationalization first. Now in Hong Kong, young girls always follow the Japanese fashion. They dress in Japanese clothes, wear Japanese necklaces or rings. Their appearances can no longer reflect the values of the society. Women all over the world buy French brands' bags, wear French brand's clothes, and even French brand's jewelries. How to distinguish those people from different society? In addition, the advance of new technologies can also affects people's behaviors. Young people often like to imitate the gestures or actions of foreign people from TV. Kissing in public places in China is not a surprise any more, while a decade before, kissing in public places can only be seen in western world. Moreover, people are more and more familiar with the behavior and appearance of other societies as it is very important for them to understand special behaviors of the other parties in some business trades or cooperation. Under some cases, it is necessary for them to behave and dress the same with local people to show their respects to the society. As a result, people's appearance and behaviors can only be a reference but not the key sign to understand a society's ideas and values.
In order to comprehend a society's ideas and values, the best way is to study the all aspects of the society thoroughly. Such aspects include history, arts, politics and so on. From a society's history, the root of the society can be traced and the origins of its people’s values and ideas can be discovered. From arts, it is not difficult to see how moral of the society was formed. Politics of the society fully shows the structure of the society and it depends so much on its history, its moral, and the ideas of values of the society. While we may have a wrong impression of the society from people’s appearances and behaviors, it is impossible for us to make such mistakes if all aspects of the society have included in our considerations.
In sum, while people's behaviors and appearances can indeed be a social sign, their distinctions have been reduced by internationalization and the advance of the new technologies. In order to better evaluate a society's ideas and values, only observing the appearance and behavior of its people is far from enough. Instead, other aspects of the society should also be studies in order to get a general image of the society. |
