140.The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.
"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years. Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion, we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another college."

In this report, the author recommends that Professor Thomas should receive a $10,000 and a promotion to Department Chairperson; otherwise she will leave Elm University for another college. To substantiate his or her suggestion, the author points out that Professor Thomas has the largest class at the university and more research grants that even exceeded her salary has been brought to the university by her. However, the argument relies on a series unsubstantiated assumptions, which render it unconvincing as it stands.
To support Professor Thomas is well worth her annual salary of $50,000, the author tries to demonstrate her teaching and research abilities for a start. Firstly, the author assumes that the fact that Professor Thomas has the largest class is tantamount to her excellent teaching ability. However, the author provides no evidence that this is the case. It is equally possible that students choose her class just because that she gives fewer restrictions to them or she does not check whether someone is absent. Also, another possibility that it is easier to pass her class contributes to the vogue in the preference of her class. Without considering and counting out these possible factors, the author cannot conclude that Professor Thomas proves her exceptional teaching abilities.
And then, by citing that the money Professor Thomas has brought to the university in research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years, the author tries to demonstrate Professor Thomas’ research abilities. Nevertheless, it is highly possible that Professor Thomas is good at social intercourse and some progress made by her colleague really interests these donations. And what is more, even assumed that Professor Thomas’ demonstrated research abilities is the only explanation to the money she has brought to the university, we see that only in the last two years during her seventeen years as a professor of botany has she brought the money more than her salary to the university. Lacking of the detailed information about the rest fifteen years, the author fails to convince me that Professor Thomas is really worth her high salary.
Additionally, even if the assumption that Professor Thomas is well worth of her salary, the suggestion that she should receive a raise in salary and a promotion to Department Chairperson is inconvincible. Only by a contrast between Professor Thomas and others in the department can we know whether it is sensible to give her a raise in salary and a promotion in position. Maybe another professor, who makes more achievements in teaching and research than her, should receive such a raise and promotion. Besides, the conclusion that without such a raise and promotion, Professor Thomas will leave Elm University for another college is presumptuous. Perhaps Professor Thomas chooses Elm University does not focus on he raise and promotion, but virtually the environment and the atmosphere attracts her.
In summary, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. To make it more convincing, the author would have to provide more evidence concerning Professor Thomas’ teaching and research abilities and the contrast with other professor’s. To better evaluate the argument, we need more information regarding the reason that Professor Thomas works in the university for seventeen years.
