TOPIC: ISSUE120 - "So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present."
WORDS: 484          TIME: 00:50:00          DATE: 2010-8-8 下午 11:56:40

Our new and complex society is built on the basis of the accumulated achievements made by our ancestors in the history. In this regard, I don't agree with the statement because I believe solutions of current problems cannot  be easily achieved without a full understanding of its origin in the past.

To begin with, the present is so tightly connected with the past that virtually every problem that we meet today can be traced back to its origin in the history. Such cases abounds in the history of social development. While we are currently trying every means to step out of the economic downturn and solve the sticking problem of high jobless rate, we must understand that these problems are direct result of the sub-prime economic crisis in 2008. However, no efficient solutions may be designed without the understanding that the economic crisis in turn, is a long-term result of a loose government regulation in the financial sector. Therefore, the fact that too much freedom in the past has caused problems today may guide governments in their decisions about the current issue and also future plans to ensure no similar tragedy may recur in the future. In other respects, since our whole social structure and political system is created and developed for the past hundreds and thousands of years, we may also need to understand the line of development of our society to better understand our current world and predict its future direction. After all, who can be confident to claim himself an expert in American political science without understanding who, on what assumptions and against what historical backgrounds, created the American constitution and the "checks and balance" principle? Thus, full understanding of the past will place us in a safer position to make judgements of current issues and adopt reasonable policies.

I also believe that some basic principles underlying the dealing of social and personal issues have remained the same from the past to the present, and are still practical in our present complex world. Recently, there is a trend in East Asian countries, especially in China, to come back to ancient Chinese philosophers, seeking for practical guidance for the handling of current issues, because these philosophers were very concerned about the human nature and the relation between man and universe, and bring in fresh inspirations to our turbulent modern society. For instance, their proposal for an "absolute pure mental status" free from unwanted desires and luxury needs resonates with Christian religious teachings and warns many of us about our "Cardinal Sins"; also, their argument for a "harmonious coexistence between human beings and the holy heaven" can be used as the strongest criticism against modern environmental pollution. The point is that these great ancient thinkers and teachers were facing similar problems like those troubling us today, therefore their line of reasoning is highly precious and forms useful resources for us.

In sum, the past and the present are involved in a holistic dimension basic on some universal principles of development. Unless we bring them together, touching on the past and anticipating into the future, we may not be able to achieve balanced and  comprehensive solution to current problems.
