Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Movies and TV programs made in one’s own country are more interesting than those made in other countries.
First, I have to clarify that the quality of the movies and TV programs we will compare in this article are on the same level, namely in whichever country these things are made they are appreciated similarly by their own people. This assumption is fundamental, because without it the comparisons that are going to be made will be meaningless. For instance, a movie carried out by a excellent and professional team is quite likely to be more interesting than a DV made by a child, wherever on earth they are judged.
The environment and culture in which one grown up play determine roles in molding his/her character, preference and personality. In fact it is the experience and background that determine what one may dislike and what one would find interest in. Taking this into consideration, I would agree that generally people will find more fun from movies and TV programs made in their own country than foreign ones.
If one wants to find interests from some entertainments, in most circumstances, he/she has to understand what the entertainment is about first. For example, a joke can only make its listener laugh when the listener know what it is telling and why it is funny. Movies and TV programs made in one’s own country can be better understood than those from abroad. First and for most, domestic movies and TV program are usually carried out in native language whereas those from abroad are often in foreign language. Thus there exists a language barrier between watchers and foreign movies or TV programs. Either the watchers have to obtain a good command of this foreign language or a translation is needed to be made to cross this barrier. However both ways are quite likely to misrepresent or lose points from the original version. Second, domestic movies and TV programs share a same culture background, only in which can some actions or expression be understood, with the watchers, while foreign ones do not. For example, due to some special east culture traditions, some plots can only be understood by Chinese people, and some actions can only make Chinese people laugh in some Kongfu movies made in China.
I admit that some movies or TV programs made abroad can be more interesting than those made domestic, as they would provide exotic picture or stories. By watching them people can feel foreign culture or learn exotic stories without having to go abroad by themselves. However, this kind of interests cannot last long, as it is based on curiosity. So long as most of these exotic scenes in the movies or TV programs run out or cannot bring up curiosity any more, this kind of interest is likely to be lost.
To sum up, as people share the same language and culture background with movies and TV programs made in their own country, generally they would be more interesting in these movies and TV programs than those that are on the same level but made in other countries, even though some of them may bring about some interest as they may provide exotic scenes or stories. |
