The reading passage presented three competing theories on the use of settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American southwest. while the professor in the lecture thinks that none of the theories is convincing.
The first theory holds that the Chaco structures were purely residential, with each housing hundreds of people. But if each of great houses has such a large capacity, then
it should have many fire palces , where each family did its daily cooking, while according to the professor, few of them have many fire places. One of the largest structures could only allow only around10 families to do their cooking and
yet ddn't have enough
room for more than100 people. So the primary function of those structures couldn't have been purely residential.
The second theory contends that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies. It may be plausible. But the professor argues that if these sttuctures were used for food storage, there should be some remains of maize containers or spilled maize. In fact we can find no more big containers or traces of maize in those structures, so the second theory is unsupportive of evidences.
A third theory proposes that the house were used as a ceremonial centers. But the professor think this hypothesis is not supportive either. Because the mound contains other things that don’t come from the ceromonies. The piles of old materials may be discarded
building materials that
wouldn’t be used any more after the construction, and the broken pots may also be some meal trash left by constructors .
In summary, none of three proposed theories is supportive by enough evidences.

110304NA Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The most important problems affecting our society today could be solved within our lifetime.
Our society is now booming at a speed that no one could imagine a hundred years ago. And this fast devoloping rate has aroused increasing concerns about serious social problems, say Energy crisis, population growth, and environmental problems, among which I think the last is the most important and can’t not be solved within our lifetime. It’s not a pessimitic remark, beacause I have some reasons to support this argument.
From the last century, people have been struggling with chemical pullutions and other envrionmental problems caused by human’s overdoing with the nature. Just name one of the most disastrous envrionmental events that happened last seveal decades, the minamata disease in Japan resulting from direct release of mercury-containing waste water, causing thousands of death. Mercury is a piosonous metal that once absorbed by human organs, can cause serious damage to the nervous system. And the released mecury won't decomposed by organism, which can contribute to the long-term remaining of the toxic substance. So one of the reason why these envrionmental problems can’t be solved within our life time is that some factors that cause serious problems will exist in a comparatively long time, just like the radiation pullution from the Neclear Leak of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
And now we're seeking for every possible means to solve or ward off adverse effects brought by social devlelopment, but we should be aware that all the progression of human being are based on the advancement of manufacturing industry, no matter the construction industry, automotive industry, or the comsumer electronic industry. And you can expect millions of tons pollution from these industries, though we have tried to recycle and reuse these trashes. Where there is manufacturing, there is pollution. Casting irons, plating metal surfaces, synthesis of plastic, gas releasing
…… all the processes you can imagine involved in manufacturing industry are pollutable. Any approach to aviod pollution? No way, unless you
cease the development of human beings.
So , environmental problems is one that will linger in the human history, and unfortunately, we can’t see the solvement within our lifetime. |
