The following appeared in a letter from the manager of a rock band named Double Rice.
'One year ago, tickets for Double Rice's concerts in stadiums around the country took, on average, at least 24 hours to sell out, if they sold out at all. But the band has been enjoying a surge in nationwide popularity among 14 to 25 year olds, and the 30,000 tickets for a recent concert in Megalopolis sold out in 12 minutes. Clearly the ticket sales in Megalopolis are a result both of the band's increased popularity and of the advertising campaign run in Megalopolis by the Ad Lib advertising agency. Thus, in order to ensure that the band's success in Megalopolis is repeated across the country, the band should hire Ad Lib to duplicate the Megalopolis ad campaign on a nationwide scale.'

By making a comparison of the tickets sale for Double Rice's (DR) band concerts in Megalopolis with sales one year ago, the manager of the rock band concludes that the successful sale of tickets for a recent concert in Megalopolis is due to the band's increased popularity and the advertising campaign run in Megalopolis by the Ad Lib advertising agency. However, the manager's argument relies on a series of unproven assumption and is therefore unconvincing as it stands.

To begin with, the manager assumes that the increased popularity of the band results in the good ticket sales. Yet it is unwarranted. It is entirely possible that people didinot find other better entertainment than the concert at that time. Perhaps the ticket is less expansive than ever or even free so that people go to enjoy the concert. Or perhaps another popular band or celebrity as inviters in DR band’s performance might be the actual reason for the concert’s success. Without better evidence of prices of tickets and assessment of people about the band, the manager cannot convince me that the popularity of band indeed has increased.

Even the popularity of band increased in the people, the argument cannot claim that we can contribute the ticket sales success to the advertising campaign run in Megalopolis by the Ad Lib advertising agency. We find no evidence in the argument to support this conclusion. Perhaps the advertising campaign is no use for tickets sale. The fans love this band not because of what the advertisement informs us but because of the impressive style of the music of DR band. So the connection between the advertisement and good tickets sales is weak and unconvincing.

In addition, even the foregoing two assumptions are proven, the success of band in Megalopolis cannot necessarily reflect the national trend. Maybe the style of band music only caters to the local people in Megalopolis rather than other regions in the nation. In that case, most of residents in other region might prefer to listening the classic concert because they regard the rock music is too noisy and boring. If so, the tickets sale is worse even than one year ago.  

Finally, we can query the assumption that Ad Lib ad campaign for the band will necessarily help the band still repeated the success across the country. The argument says nothing about the agency. Perhaps most of the previous ad tasks of this agency are unsatisfying. Or perhaps, the scale of this agency is so small that they cannot have the ability of launch a national campaign for this band. Without the survey about the achievement of this ad agency, the manager cannot defend that the regional achievement of his band can predict the national influence of band.

To sum up, the argument seems to be logical if the tickets sales can reflect the popularity of the rock band. However, the argument relies on insufficient evidences which cannot support the popularity of the rock band in Megalopolis and the whole nation, as well as the role of ad campaign. To strengthen the argument, the manager of DR band should provide sufficient statistics of the band fans in Megalopolis and the whole country and that the Ad Lib advertising agency indeed plays an indispensable role in the successful concert of Megalopolis. Even with thee evidence, I need know why the tickets sale is better than one year ago, and whether the ability Ad Lib advertising agency can guarantee that the continual success of band across most regions of the nation.

攻的地方不对吗

很明显,不需要攻击popularity,而是攻击advertisement的效果。
论点一:从数据上找问题
1 以前是平均记录,有可能买的很快,也有可能买的很满,没有证据表明以前没有比在Megapolis卖的更快的记录。
2 现在在Megapolis买的是否是全部的票,文中也没有指出。
3 ad lib 只是一次的表现,是否很有能力,无法确定
论点二:现在在Megapolis的成功的原因到底是什么
1 许多其他原因没有给出
2 popularity 和 advertisement交织在一起,很有可能popularity的效果很大,而adverstisement的效果是负的,populartity掩盖了advertisement的无能,没有advertisement可能效果很好。
论点三 缺乏对比
1 没有将ad lib  与其他公司作比较。
