11"All nations should help support the development of a global university designed to engage students in the process of solving the world's most persistent social problems."
Though we human beings made a glorious progress in many fields these years, there indeed exist some persistent social problems. The author claims that all nations should engage in establishing a global university which is designed to solve the world's most persistent problems. I concede that the global university would serve all nations’ interests. Nevertheless, it seems to me that this university would suffer from several problems which all participant countries should pay enough attention to and think about, or certain risks might be posed.
One compelling reason for establishing a global university has to do with the fact it will provide a platform for faculty and students from different countries to communicate and cooperate to address the enduring problems. Branded with a stentorian slogan “Global Village", the world as a whole becomes smaller and there are some global problems appearing which have a increasingly global nature. Both the depletion of the atmospheric ozone and the greenhouse effect has threatened the very survival of our human beings. The terrorism has greatly threatened the public safety even the national security. All these problems will go unsolved only turning to the endeavor of one or two countries. The global university will provide us a change to have intellectual talents from varies districts united to solve certain persistent social problems. Considering this factor, the global university will make a good sense.
However, aside from some merits of this university, some problems need to draw the participant countries' attention. Firstly, this global university might bear the stress from the countries which had made an investment in this university. Because of the selfish motives, all nations will expect to have their own agenda advanced and have their own social problems solved. Perhaps the country which invests more money will demand to solve the problems in its area which lead to a bad influence. So there will be a boring question which problem requires the university's resources and attention and which academic area the university should develop first. Moreover, the intellectual talents all over the world will draw to serve this university, while other countries suffer from a dilemma of lacking experts. So the participant countries should consider the method to allocate resources and intellectual talent.
And another problem that might impede the establishment of a global university is that whether only one university would solve the main persistent problems all over the world. In my view it is quite not enough to have only a global university to have a research on the enduring problems puzzling the world. Despite the limitation of resources, the amount of faculty and students this university has are too little to satisfy every country's interests. In fact, there are other simpler ways which have the same functions. People from different countries can reach an agreement on a persistent problem by face-to-face conference based on the Internet. A myriad of forums can be organized to have the diverse culture and educational perspectives interacted. These measures are indeed easier and have less cost to adopt than constructing a new university which will be a giant time and money consuming work.
In sum, the establish of a global university with the purpose of solving the persistent global problems has some merits in some aspects, but a lot of puzzling problems follow as a consequence.
