I agree with the speaker that to observe the way people look, dress and act can infer the society's ideas and values. However, only throngh the observation of people's appearance and behavior, one cannot understand the society's culture in whole. To fully know a society, one should know more about its history and the major developments in its fields of art and science.
It is true that people express their attitudes and interests directly by the clothes they are waring and the behaviors they are acting. For example, a society in which the T-shirt printed with the picture of Martin Luther King—the one leaded black people in American to fight for the ture liberty—are more likely to be a society of freedom. As members of the society, what most people choose to be their attitudes would most likely become the ideas of the mainstream and further establish the value system of the entire society. Thus, the attitudes and preferences of people finally contribute to the culture of their contemporary society. Yet, the observation on the people's appearence and behavior are far from enough for one to acknowledge the society throughout.
The society's history is important for one to understand the society's ideas and values in that no society can simple saperate its current conditions from its past. Every society has its past and what did its people expirence would play an important role on what people now hold as thier attitudes. Studying on its history can also tell us how the society formed and how it developed till the contemporary. Knowing the history, one can not only know what are the society’s ideas and values, but also the reason of being so.
Furthermore, the major development in its fields of art and science can reflect the society's ideas and values as well. Art is something created to express typical emotions and mirrows the people's life and the reality. Those great art works accepted by the public because they can strike the chord in the hearts of the audiences and dig out the ineral thoughts of people that themselves cannot ever find. Thus, the acception of the people can be regarded as a kind of agreement with the artist and therefore tells us some thing much deeper than merely the apperance of people can do.
On the other hand, the major developments in the field of science are of great significance in that it tells us what kind of attitude its people are going to have in the near future. For example, the Gene program. A society with an advanced theorical development in gene program and reach the breakthrough of the program are more likely to have open-minded people as its members. After all, researchers and scholars can never complete the task without the support from thier government and their peoples.
In conclusion, only concentrated in observing the appearance and behavior of its people are obviously not enough for one to truly catch the society's spirit. And the study on the society's history and fields like art and science are needed if one want to acquire the society's real ideas.
I agree with the speaker that to observe the way people look, dress and act can infer the society's ideas and values.刚开头就没有回旋的余地,正说到底,这个风险比较大,而且比较片面。 However, only throngh the observation of people's appearance and behavior, one cannot understand the society's culture in whole. To fully know(understand) a society, one should know more about its history and the major developments in its fields of art and science.
It is true that people express their attitudes and interests directly by the clothes they are waring and the behaviors they are acting.(我发表一下个人意见,比如说在西安,大家都穿一身灰色衣服,怎么看出个性的区别?依我看大城市这个现象比较多,是个泛例。尤其是大城市小偷多,穿得稍微张扬一些都成了小偷的目标。) For example, a society in which the T-shirt printed with the picture of Martin Luther King—the one leaded black people in American to fight for the ture liberty—are more likely to be a society of freedom.(比如说美国的黑人极端组织也喜欢King,但这不代表他们不极端。论据有些问题。 As members of the society, what most people choose to be their attitudes would most likely become the ideas of the mainstream and further establish the value system of the entire society.
