题目:ARGUMENT190 - The following is a letter to the editor of the Glenville Gazette, a local newspaper.
"Over the past few years, the number of people who have purchased advance tickets for the Glenville Summer Concert series has declined, indicating lack of community support. Although the weather has been unpredictable in the past few years, this cannot be the reason for the decline in advance ticket purchases, because many people attended the concerts even in bad weather. Clearly, then, the reason for the decline is the choice of music, so the organizers of the concert should feature more modern music in the future and should be sure to include music composed by Richerts, whose recordings Glenville residents purchase more often than any other contemporary recordings. This strategy will undoubtedly increase advance ticket purchases and will increase attendance at the concerts."

In the letter, the author recommends that concert should feature more modern music and be sure to include music composed by Richerts. He based on the evidence that the recordings of Richerts were purchased more often, and declined sales of tickets could not due to bad weather, since they will go on bad weather day. Close scrutiny to each piece of evidence, however, indicates that these proofs are unwarranted.
To begin with, in asserting the high sales of Richerts recordings in Glenville, the author implies that people incline to listen to it on the concert. However, it may be not the case at all. First, just as the author states, that Richerts's recordings is more popular than other contemporary recordings, and then people may familiar with his music. If so, they maybe incline to listen to some other music on the concert rather than enjoy the repeated music. Second, the author fails to provide information about the sales of other kinds of music, including classical ones, perhaps the sales of them is outstrip the one of Richerts. Third, even assuming that Glenville would love to have Richerts music on the concert, the audience may be constituted with population in other places, without knowing their preference, we cannot convinced that they will also like Richerts's. Accordingly, this strategy may go a long way toward the author's expectation----- increase advance tickets purchases.
What's more, the fact that many people attended the concerts even in bad weather lend scant support that bad weather could not responsible for the decline of the advances tickets. They went to the concert may just avoid wasting their money on the advance tickets, not for their enthusiasm for the concert, and their uncomfortable experience during the bad weather may lead to a decline desire to purchase advance tickets. Therefore, the author fails to rule out this scenario, he cannot conclude that the bad weather could not be the reason.
Finally, the author commits a fallacy of choice dilemma, since he fails to take other factors which may also contribute to the diminishing sales of advance tickets into account. For example, perhaps the whole economic situation is so undesirable, as to decreasing people's willing and capability of this entertainment, or the prices are too high for the locals. Also, there is possibility that it is the bad environment, noisy condition, awful sound effect prevent people attending the concert any more. Or, it is entirely possible that recently the ways of enjoy music has changed, more people prefer download music from Internet without paying money rather than going to concert.(All the explanations may be affecting factors, and thus only by providing more modern music will not increase advance ticket purchases and attendance at the concerts.)
In sum, the argument is so untenable since the evidence lend scant support to the conclusion. Unless the speaker provide information about what leads to the decline of purchases, and what the audience actually need, the argument could be more reasonable. |
