We can still be moved at the story of Jean Valjean just like the European in the 17th century, or, be equally enchanted in the Impression, Sunrise even we live on a quite different stage from Monet. What value the artists leave us is a far-reaching influence on our sense and emotion, always continuing along with our life as a splendid part ofhistory. Yet it is for the glorious impression those great art works have on our mind that we almost neglect the function, and the value they created as well, of those contemporary critics of the artists.

Human's pursuit of sublimation of spirit and self-awareness is an eternal topic during our development. And art, which is broadly defined as the process or product appealing to emotion and sense, is perfect to convey our craving of it. As a result, art value, stemming from the impact artists brought on people's feelings and mind, always might be transferred from generation to generation, and in other words, lasting.


Consider Claude Debussy, the most prominent figure within the field of Impessional Music, who is regarded as one of the most influential composers. Not only for the latter generation of musicians such as Maurice Ravel or Bill Evans, but also for our common populace, his music enchants all audience with the harmonies and chord progression, and this tends not to be declining for our descendants as long as they are educated to know a little about music appreciation. Or we can take those glorious classical novels into account. Even accomplished centuries ago, Jane Eyre' s resistance of her fate still encourages lots of women and men, and Quasimodo's pure heart is impressed in people's mind every time we read or review it. When art comes to ponderate humanity and spirits, its value and influence might last for incredible long time, for human cannot live without spiritual support. So the physical existence of an artist is simply about several decades, but the result behind him would probably be everlasting.

Compared with the brilliant beauty and deeply impression the art brings, what critics have done is likely considered to be nitpicking or even useless. Yet what if the books teaching us how to appreciate paintings and music disappeared, or the introduction and criticism of novels did not exist anymore? To understand the profound art works is not human's instinct. To the contrary, especially for the majority of people, we need education to acquire the ability to realize the deep-seated idea of the works. So who offer all these tools to us? Th critics. What we know about critics' work is just about some carp claiming which painting is good or just nonsense, however, in most cases, their observations and thought help normal people step into the noble palace of art. From the works of their research, we can learn more about what is art and how to appreciate it. And for those art works that are too profound to be understanded for common people, critics might play a vital role to exert its value try to preserve it. In other words, critics provide artists with a wider range of audience or readers, and this, to some extent, secures art's lasting value.

A novelist needs people to read his books and understand what he is really concerned with; a drawer will be delighted when he encounters someone who really appreciated his abstract shapes and colours; and a musician might be encouraged to see people's intoxicated look. Art's "lasting value" cannot live long without other non-artist ,including critics and common ones. After all, art, along with its value, is never a matter of single person, but one of the whole human beings.
