Argument149

The following is a memorandum from the director of personnel to the president of Get-Away Airlines.
"Since our mechanics are responsible for inspecting and maintaining our aircraft, Get-Away Airlines should pay to send them to the Quality-Care Seminar, a two-week seminar on proper maintenance procedures. I recommend this seminar because it is likely to be a wise investment, given that the automobile racing industry recently reported that the performance of its maintenance crews improved markedly after their crews had attended the seminar. These maintenance crews perform many of the same functions as do our mechanics, including refueling and repairing engines. The money we spend on sending our staff to the seminar will inevitably lead to improved maintenance and thus to greater customer satisfaction along with greater profits for our airline."

The memorandum shown above is well presented, but not thoroughly well-reasoned. By making a comparison of the maintenance of Get-Away Airline (GGA), an airline company, with that of automobile racing industry, which has got notable improvement from the training of the Quality Care (QC) seminar, the GGA's personnel director concludes that the QC seminar will equally enhance the maintenance quality of its company, and furthermore get greater customer satisfaction to make much more profit. However, the caution relationship between attending the QC seminar and eventually greater profit is not as tenable as it announced.

First of all, the director needs to well examine the similarities and differences between the maintenance of airline and that of automobile racing industry. Besides the similarities mentioned in the argument, the differences may be more obvious for the clearly different objectives in two types of maintenances. An automobile racing maintenance crew strives to create and maintain the fastest machine possible to enable its driver to cross the finish line in the first place. An aircraft maintenance crew is devoted to ensuring that the aircraft can fly safely to transport people and cargo crew from one place to another. Speed is the main focus of the race car industry while the cost and safety are the main focuses of an airline. Without considering these fundamental aspects of the maintenance of two industries, farther analysis on the necessities of GC seminar on the GAA has no sense at all.

Additionally, even assuming the procedures of the maintenance in the two industries are almost the same, the director's assertion that QC seminar lead to improve the maintenance of GAA is still unconvincing. However, it is entirely possible that their perform level is already very high and the seminar will afford a little or no improvement. The assertion can be more justifiable if the director can provides the contents, or at least the syllabus of this seminar, to point out what the GAA's maintenance can acquire in this seminar. Maybe the point-to-point analysis will help the QC seminar to improve the quality of their maintenance to a greater extent, if it has.

Finally, the director refers to the inevitability of improved maintenance thus leading to greater customer satisfaction and therefore greater profits. This is a possible chain of events, certainly not the inevitable progression. There is no direct correlation between improved maintenance and increased customer satisfaction, let alone an increase in the profits. Aircraft maintenance is necessarily a behind the scenesactivity the customers rarely notice, barring some catastrophic failure. It is doubtful that the improved maintenance would lead to any increase in customer satisfaction. Additionally, customer may already be completely satisfied with GAA's services, thus no greater profits are possible from increasing satisfaction.

The intention of this memorandum is to persuade the president to send the mechanics to attend QC seminar. However, from the existing information in the memorandum, the director may not achieve the purpose without hitch. To bolster this argument the director must provide more detailed information on the comparison of the maintenance in two industries and content of QC seminar, these materials will help the president to evaluate the feasibility and necessity of attending QC seminar. Furthermore, the director should focus on the constructing the relationship between the attending QC seminar and eventually profits, which are almost capitalist concerned.
