Issue 7
"the video camera provides such an accurate and convincing record of contemporary life that it has become a more important form of documentation than written records"
Which one is more important when referring to documentation, video camera or written records? In respond to this issue, we need to analyse the proposition comprehensively from the dialectic perspective, investing the nature of the truth by critical analysis of concepts and hypotheses. The author declares that video camera becomes a more important way to record life rather than written records because it can present more convincing and accurate picture. However, it sounds a little superficial. The final judgment, in my perspective, should depend on a case-by-case analysis.
Standing on a very basic facet, the disseminate of camera among ordinary people cannot compare with the spread of the written papers, cause it is much more expensive while easy to broke down. Moreover, in some occasions, it is far more convenient when we taking a piece of paper than carring a camera. Most significantly, the written records are often of great value because of the influence represented, and the document itself when it is believed to be a rare or unique and authentic representation of the information it contains. The written documents may have the most widely spread value of business process, governance and law, and even in the religion canonical content. In business affairs, the management between different firms, like contracts,as well the interfaces among the suppliers, employees, and customers, like archives, counts on written documents. In this perspective, the written ones are considered as official and formal. For example, tickets given by the policeman are a piece of serious paper, rather than a picture or a video.
In the moral cultural facet, though the video camera provides an accurate record of physical life and phenomena, it cannot competently provide insight into the mind. The insights include delicacy thoughts of the writer, the expression of emotion, and the use of rhetoric devices like irony and metaphor, may be effective to evoke the an emotional response in the audience. An example of rhetorical device is this passage attributed to a speech by Abraham Lincoln about a political adversary in which Lincoln said that his adversary had "dived down deeper into the sea of knowledge and come up drier than any other man he knew". This, we can only understand by these words of this great leader, which excels all forms of video camera records.
Last but not least, video is the technology of electronically capturing, recording, processing, storing, transmitting, and reconstructing a sequence of still images representing scenes in motion. Obviously, it process many advantages, for instance, cameras can catch the actions in a split second, and transmit in a faster way, so as to provide a much convenient way for the public. Video can also be viewed through the Internet as video clips or streaming media clips on computer monitors.
Video camera has its merit, but we should make good use of technology without abandoning traditional methods. In this rapid-changing society, we have to use these two to build upon one another, since we need to know various kinds of information as quickly as possible. The two factors are not mutual contradiction, but rather inner relevant. Most news medias use the combination of pictures or videos as well as the written pieces, people can get maximum information from this "Cooperation"
From the analyses made above, I strongly commit to the notion that we cannot abandon the traditional ways of record, which is considered official and formal, while make good use of the new technology. Without video camera, the transmission of information maybe slow and less active. Without written records, the document will lost its authority. In a word, we need to call for a balance between the two. |
