Data, as the explanation of a certain theory, plays a vital role in convincing both experts and laymen. Usually, if a theory is put forward without some data as its proof, it is less trustworthy or authoritative, since it is easily misunderstood that the writer fabricated it without practical experiences or operations. So, in my point of view, to a certain degree, we almost can say that to theorize while without data is really mistaken.
Theory, defined as systemic conclusions from practice regarding nature and society by people, it needs data to explain, complement, and illuminate its correctness, making it more accurate and rigorous since it is well-organized both in experiment and practice. In order to conclude the theory of Conservation of Mechanical Energy, tens of thousands of examples and data have been submitted, thus making it a basic rule in our physical world. In addition, Conservation of Mass laws also have innumerate data to support its validity. So from the above, it is understandable that in order to be an everlasting at least lasting for a long time theory, one must have data as its strong background, since it means that it is valid in practice rather than oral beliefs.
In spite of its function of supporting the theory, data is also of great necessities before one subject draws its certain conclusion. It goes without saying that engineering needs to do a lot of experiments and register the data gaining from the experiments, and it is from these data that a theory can be brought forward. Furthermore, some social and liberal arts also need to do social investigation and draw conclusion from the data they collected, like the investigation questionnaires, random drawing and so many varies of means in obtaining the common data in reflecting to a certain incident or event. Nevertheless, someone may argue that in some realms, like arts or literature, original thoughts are believed to be the most crucial impetus that no data is needed in putting out a "theory". But is it theory in that way? Actually they are more like a kind of subjective thinking. They are the artists' own way in expressing his inner feelings or the how the world looks like in his eyes. It can not be defined as theory. So from this angle, we nearly can say that data is really essential even a mandatory step before one draws out a theory.
Most importantly, without data as its support, it can only be named as guess or hypotheses rather than a theory. Actually, most instances tell us that a so-called theory which usually without data to support its correctness are mostly fallacies. Alchemy, the most fantastic "theory” ever existing in history, was once believed to be a theory, (honestly speaking I hope it is true either), without data as its support or any practical data to prove its precision, fooled a large number of people, however, shattered in front of some chemical data (obtained by some chemists during their experiments). So the perpetual motion machine was proved to be wrong in front of the data received in the Conservation of Mechanical Energy. However, someone may say that limited by our present technology, we can not get data through certain experiments, but the sentence has been accepted by most scientists and public, like Newton first law of motion and so on. I admit that there are several such exceptions, however, compared with our present situation that most theories are vigorously proved by data, it almost can be neglected in my arguments.
By and large, theory is the objective existing in the nature, but waiting to be discovered, submersed by us human. In order to more precisely indicate such a law, more and accurate data are needed in supporting the theory, so that more objective regulations can be found and made good use by us, making our academic world more complete and scientific. |
