The speaker contends that most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue and loyalty is too often a destructive than a positive force. In my point of view, loyalty is a virtue and it is a positive force in most situations rather than a destructive one.
First, loyalty is an essential virtue for a family and it is the basic element which unions the family. When a new couple gets married, they swear to each other that they will love each other forever no matter what happens. They are bound to be loyal to each other. Loyalty is one of the most important aspects which link the whole family tightly. If a husband or a wife is not loyalty to his or her family, the family will be ruined and this will bring about lots of misery to the whole family.
Secondly, loyalty plays a favorable impact on one's career. When one employs in a working place, the most essential virtue for employees is loyalty. With the virtue of loyalty, one will spare no efforts to make profits for the company and think about the interests of the company all the time. If one is not loyal to the company, he or she will not care much about the company.
Thirdly, it is an indispensable virtue in a society and in a country. With the loyalty to the country, one has courage to overcome the difficulties and he will sacrifice his own interests in order to realize the country's achievements. For instance, during World War I and World War II, so many loyal soldiers died on the way to obtain their country's bright future.
However, we cannot overrate the importance of loyalty. On one hand, we admit that loyalty can have a favorable impact on our family, career and our society. On the other hand, overestimating loyalty will cause unfavorable effects. For example, if one is too obsessed in the loyalty to his career, perhaps he will take any action to show his loyalty to his employers. I saw a movie about a guy who wanted to show his loyalty to his company, he stole the information of another company and took some unjustified means to achieve his goal. Finally he broke the law and paid a heavy price. Therefore, one should take appropriate means to show his loyalty to his employer and achieve his goals.
Admittedly, there are other virtues besides loyalty. We should have an overall idea and consider other virtues in the society. It is essential for a family, a place of employment, any institution to consider other virtues of a person, such as his personality, his ability and so on.
From what has been discussed above, we can safely arrive in the conclusion that loyalty is a virtue. We should make good use of this virtue to obtain more achievements. Meanwhile, we should take the considerable means to show our loyalty to our family, our employers.
题目:ARGUMENT25 - The following appeared in a memo from the mayor of the town of Hopewell.
"Two years ago, the town of Ocean View built a new municipal golf course and resort hotel. During the past two years, tourism in Ocean View has increased, new businesses have opened there, and Ocean View's tax revenues have risen by 30 percent. The best way to improve Hopewell's economy, and generate additional tax revenues, is to build a golf course and resort hotel similar to those in Ocean View."

In the memo, the mayor concludes that the best way to improve Hopewell's economy, and generate additional tax revenues, is to build a golf course and resort hotel. To support his conclusion, he cites that two years ago, the town of Ocean View built a mew golf course and resort hotel. He also points out that during the past two years, tourism in Ocean View has increased, new businesses have opened there, and Ocean View's tax revenues have risen by 30 percent. This argument is flawed in several aspects.
First, the mayor did not analyze the reason why tourism in Ocean View has increased and why Ocean View's tax revenues have risen by 30 percent. He assumes that it is because of the building of golf course and resort hotel. Perhaps there are lots of places of interests which attract more tourists in Ocean View. And perhaps it is because the rising of tourism in Ocean View that the tax revenues have risen.
Secondly, the mayor failed to persuade me that it is appropriate in Hopewell to build golf course and resort hotel. He did not compare the differences such as the different graphic, weather, and the living standard between Ocean View and Hopewell. Perhaps there are not enough space in Hopewell to build a golf course and resort hotel, or maybe it rains a lot in Hopewell that it is not suitable to build golf course there.
Third, the mayor did not consider the cost of building golf course and resort hotel. If we need to spend too much on the building of golf course and resort hotel, maybe it will reduce the economy of Hopewell instead of improving the economy.
Last but not least, the mayor failed to take the living standard in Hopewell into account. Maybe lots of people in Hopewell cannot afford to go to the golf course and resort hotel, so it is unreliable to conclude that building the golf course and resort hotel will improve the economy in Hopewell.
In sum, the mayor drew the conclusion on a series of assumptions. To make his memo persuasive, he should compare the differences and similarities in these two towns to assure us that the building of golf course will improve the economy. Meanwhile, he should consider other aspects, such as the cost of the building, the living standard of Hopewell to make his memo more persuasive. |
