TOPIC: ARGUMENT174 - The following recommendation was made by the president and administrative staff of Grove College, a private institution, to the college's governing committee.

"We recommend that Grove College preserve its century-old tradition of all-female education rather than admit men into its programs. It is true that a majority of faculty members voted in favor of coeducation, arguing that it would encourage more students to apply to Grove. But eighty percent of the students responding to a survey conducted by the student government wanted the school to remain all female, and over half of the alumni who answered a separate survey also opposed coeducation. Keeping the college all-female, therefore, will improve morale among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college financially."

The author recommends the Grove College to remain its female only education in order to improve moral among students and convince alumni to keep supporting the college. Additionally, two surveys were also cited to support his or her attitude. Reasonable as the argument seems, there are still some aspects require further consideration.

To begin with, the survey performed among the students contributes little to support the conclusion of the author, as they are girls, who are too shy to express their desire to coeducation with boys. Although over a half of alumni oppose co-education, we can not get the information that if the college shifted to a co-education one, the alumni would not continue to support this college. The reason is that, it is the affection for the mother college which contributes to the alumni' desire to support the college, not the education pattern of it. At the same time it is entirely possible that most of the alumni supported the college financially hold the point that the college should convey to a co-education college. So the surveys fail to support the author.

Another flaw should be point out is that the author hastily concluded that the all-female education pattern can improve morale among students with out any ground. To be honest, the co-education pattern may contribute to the morale improvement among the students, for the society is mixed with male and female. The essential purpose of the education is to socialize the younger. In this concern the intercourse between the anti- is an important course for the development of the younger.

As discussed above, the author fails to support only by the information he presented. To bolster this argument, the author should program more reliable surveys and find out what is the real matter related to the financial support from the alumni. Further more, it is also reasonable to search other reasonable means to improve the morale among students rather than keep this college an all-female one.
