TOPIC: ARGUMENT142 - The article entitled 'Eating Iron' in last month's issue of Eating for Health reported that a recent study found a correlation between high levels of iron in the diet and an increased risk of heart disease. Further, it is well established that there is a link between large amounts of red meat in the diet and heart disease, and red meat is high in iron. On the basis of the study and the well-established link between red meat and heart disease, we can conclude that the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease, then, is most probably a function of the correlation between red meat and heart disease.

In the argument, the writer concludes that the correlation between high levels of iron and heart disease is caused by the correlation between red meat and heart disease. To support his assertion, he refers to the fact that eating large amount of red meat contributes to heart disease and red meat is rich in iron. However, his conclusion and evidences suffer from flaws.
To begin with, if there were linkage between the correlation of red meat and heart disease and the relationship between iron and heart disease, the writer is too hasty to conclude that the former is cause and the later is the effect. But, according to common sense, the relationship between iron and heart disease is more fundamental than the relation between red meat and heart disease. That is, it is more possible that because of the amount of iron red meat contains, red meats are likely to result in heart disease.
Furthermore, the linkage between the correlation between high iron levels and heart disease and the correlation between red meat and heart disease is open to doubt. Under the condition that iron is one cause of heart disease, the fact that red meat contains a large quantity of iron are not able to ensure that iron is the very answer to the question why eat red meat might lead to heart disease. As is known to all, red meat contains various kinds of nutrient that might be related to heart disease, such as fat and certain sorts of protein. Possibly, though iron is partly responsible for heart disease, the main cause is the large amount of fat one ingests while he eats red meat. Furthermore, the function of red meat on different people varied according to the different body condition. Possibly for those who are susceptible to iron, iron is the main reason; and for those who lack exercise, fat is the main cause.
On the other hand, admitting that iron is a linking point of red meat and heart disease, it is still dubious whether iron is the most important way of men to ingest iron. In fact, a large number of foods contain iron and some of them, as a common knowledge contain even most iron than red meat. Moreover, for those who have special religions such as Muslims, they never eat red meat, but they still suffer from heart disease. A reasonable explanation of this phenomenon could be that they ingest iron from other kinds of sources. Without ruling out these possibilities, the conclusion that the correlation between iron and heart disease is most probably a function of red meat's relation to heart disease is not stable.
To sum up, the argument might be more reasonable if the writer took a more careful study and conducted surveys of large groups of people on the relationship between iron, red meat and heart disease to exclude the influence of other factors. |
