TOPIC: ARGUMENT15 - The following appeared in a newsletter offering advice to investors.

"Over 80 percent of the respondents to a recent survey indicated a desire to reduce their intake of foods containing fats and cholesterol, and today low-fat products abound in many food stores. Since many of the food products currently marketed by Old Dairy Industries are high in fat and cholesterol, the company's sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will no doubt decrease. We therefore advise Old Dairy stockholders to sell their shares and other investors not to purchase stock in this company."

The newsletter concludes that Old Diary (OD) stockholders should to sell their shares and other investors no to purchase stock in this company, for the reason that the company's sales are likely to diminish greatly and their profits will decrease. In order to support the conclusion, the author cites a survey in which 80% of respondents indicated a desire to reduce their intake of foods. However, I find this advice specious, on several grounds.

First of all, the author fails to assure me that the survey results accurately reflect the desires of most consumers, or that the results accurately predict consumer behaviors. Without evidence that the respondents' desires are representative of those of the overall population where OD products are sold, it is unconvincing to draw any conclusion about the future food buying habits from the survey. It is possible that the samples of the survey are just a few of consumers. But the most of consumers don't like this. Thus, for that matter, I cannot accept the author's suggestion.

Secondly, the fact that the abundance of low-fat products does not equal that increasing demand for low-fat diary products or diminishing demand for high-fat dairy products. The author fails to give a convincing data about the sales volume of low-fat and high-fat diary products. It is possible that the factual sales volume of low-fat is low, even the low-fat products abound in many food stores. Therefore, the abundance of low-fat products cannot lend any support to conclusion.

Thirdly, even assume that consumers trend to purchasing more low-fat diary products and fewer low-fat products, the newsletter concludes too hastily that OD profits will decline as a result. It is obvious that the author fails to take account into the measure which may be taken by OD. It is possible that OD may change its number of daily products and product more low-fat diary products while less high-fat diary products. The author never rule out the possibility, the conclusion is incredible.

At last, even the OD’s
profits will decline, it does not mean purchase stock in this company cannot get profits. For one thing, the OD profits may be still huge after it declining. So people who hold the shock of this company may still have a quite few profits .For other thing, the price of shock is fluctuating, even the OD’s profits will decline, it may be still profitable to purchase the shock in this company and then sell it. Therefore, the advice of the newsletter should be considered carefully.

To sum up, without more information about the survey, the advice of the newsletter is not wise as it stands. To better assess the soundness of this advice it would be helpful to know the following : 1)the particular information about the survey's respondents; 2) the concrete sales volumes of low-fat products and high-fat products; 3) the development plans of OD. Without those information, the author's conclusion is not convincing.

终于写完了,参考了范文很多地方。

限时写完,还有些难度,重点还是背短语。

写到很晚了,看到自己的作业列表一点一点变长,真不忍心让它中断。。。

加油。 Never give up.
