TOPIC: ISSUE70 - "In any profession-business, politics, education, government-those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership."

Old and new is always an active topic since ancient times. As with leaders of human beings, the old ones are often more experienced, while the new ones have more enthusiasm. The speaker concludes that the leaders in every profession, including business, politics, and so on, should step down in five years, which is the best way for enterprise to thrive. However, the issue is too complex to get a simple conclusion. I will look into this topic in two aspects as below.
Different kinds of leaders have different advantages. By looking into the original purpose of setting leaders, we can find that those in power can give their lower levels guide, hope , restrictions as well as harmonization. On the one hand, those who have been on their positions for quite a few years, are generally more experienced and are familiar with the tasks they face. For instance, they have got more opportunities to get in touch with the upper levels before; and they generally have better views about the teams as a whole. On the other hand, those who are new to the work, often get new ideas to the position. And if they get the position from election, their new policies and decisions usually better present the trend of the most people. At least, they are not likely to abuse their power during the period when they just get the positions.
However, the question how many years should the leaders hold their power is hard to answer. There is not s certain answer under all these conditions. In a given position, such as a headmaster of a primary school, their work can be judged on the activities and grades in the school, thus he or she could be evaluated in a single year whether he or she is suitable for the job. In this example, 5 years is obviously too long for a bad headmaster. Whereas, in other conditions, perhaps one's progress cannot be judged in 5 years, it is accordingly unfair to ask those in power to step down before their policies and actions fruiting.
In conclusion, old leader or new leader is a complex question. As we can not give a final conclusion on how long period should the leaders stay in position, we may cultivate ideas to evaluate the leaders when they are still in power. |
