The speaker asserts that it is artist, not the critic, who gives society something of lasting value. In my view, it is true that artist brings society something of lasting value. However, critic also plays important role in the process of making a work having value. The contributions of artists and critics will be discussed below.
Admittedly, artists are the creators of artworks, and not former, no latter. As far as I concerned, artists bring society two kinds of lasting value at least. Firstly, it is artist, not the critic, who gets the original creative inspiration of an artwork. The artist gets an idea or an emotion from his or her experience and thinking. Then he or her picks up a suitable art form to express the idea or emotion. Monet was attracted by the beautiful landscape of sunrise and then painted 'Impression, Sunrise'; Hemingway was moved by the courage of human beings then he wrote the famous novel 'Old Man and the Sea'; Beethoven composed his Symphony No.9 so as to express his earnest feeling which buried deeply in the heart. In sum, without those great artists, none of the precious opuses could exist in our world.
However, critics also bring society something of lasting value, because the comments of critics are also part of process of recreating the artworks by their comprehension. For one artwork, there are often diversified interpretations by different critics. Those interpretations recreate the artwork and also expand its value. We can see no further than Da vinci's masterpiece Mona Lisa, critics give various explanation to the mysterious smile of Mona Lisa. Though these explanations may not be the real mean of the author altogether, they still give us diversified charming Mona Lisa. In sum, criticisms of critics can help us to appreciate an artwork from different view. Any of those different angles is not meaningless for discovering the essence of the work and accumulating its value.
At last, with the development of society, increasing number of artworks and the styles of art are created, and critics will be more and more important. Firstly, lots of new styles of arts are emerged every day. Take dance for example, Hip-Hop and Belly Dance both are new comer comparing to traditional dance. Critics of dance can be used as the criterion to help us appreciate them. Secondly, there are so many artworks that we have no time to survey all of them. Therefore, it is very useful that critics pick up the several best of them for us. Just as we cannot leave search engine in information age, we also cannot leave critics in current society.
All in all, I agree with the speaker asserts that artists bring society lasting value for the reason that no artist, no artwork. However, I disagree with that critics never give society value. As far as I concerned, the relationship between artists and critics just like a digit one followed several zero. One zero presents nothing, but we cannot say in the number '100', zeros present nothing. |
