TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."

Our society is changing so rapidly in fashion, thought, knowledge, technology and so forth nowadays. Yet, there seem to be some permanent value staying firmly to hold the pine of the whole society, which is consisted of virtues and moralities like tolerance, cooperation, selflessness, respect as well as love.

Thanks to the biggest supporter and advocator of these ever-lasting values, who hide themselves inside daily life besides politic. Its name is art. Through variety products in many forms, art leads us to a world which is a reflection of reality, truth and artists' emotions and feelings.

When people come into raptures at the mere mention of personal interest and power, art reminds us that there are some more valuable things growing in our life and heart which step from treasure of human nature and wisdom. The movie "Leo" leaves me a clear expression on the compassion, courage and justice embracing in it, despite the leader role of the movie is a killer. I can see from the movie that even though some day violence and ignorance fulfill the society there will still be eagerness of love, peace, and sunshine in human's heart forever.

Since art plays as some reminder in our life, it usually has the burden to lead the way and help people reduce pressure accumulated day by day. No matter painting, music, entertainment program and literature all provide us the respective of observing things which we would not find in busy life. The experience of listening to a classical opera after a period of work full of brainstorm often exert positive effects on people since episode and music in the program may cause the audiences' sharing feeling and emotions and then help them liberate themselves in spiritual level.

Turn our attention to critics whose critical obligation is to illustrate the meaning of art as people usually considered. But here people may fail to take into account the fact that critics also play the role as the preserver of art. Critics not only provide analysis on the art products from the experts’ respective. They keep art alive and accessible to ordinary people although they hold distinct opinions toward the same piece. Paragons as the masterpiece of impressionists come immediately to mind. At first, it is critics’ controversy on the treasuries of this kind of new form in painting keep this art form’s potential value which promote common people’s curious, interest and understanding toward impressionable painting.

Obviously, critics are only the by product of art. But the critic also guard art as a important role in society, for the art’s sound itself often not loud enough to focus people’s attention. And critics which although are born from art act as the defender of art when critics grow mature. Imagine the world without critics but art. In this kind of world where people do not embrace the ability to identify, to appreciate, and to understand, it hardly could exist art any more, let alone masterpiece.
