The speaker asserts that technologies actually determine social customs and ethics rather than simply influencing them. At first glance, the opinion seems to be somewhat convincing, however, the further reflection tells me I can’t agree with it completely.



Undeniable, technologies play an important role in affecting the social customs and ethics, many traditional habits have been changed through high technology. For example, the common way of communication was talking face to face or through telephone, nowadays, with the rapid development of internet, this new methods has replaced the traditional ones gradually, what’s more, the widely use of the internet has brought a revolution of new life and abridge the distances between different ideological systems. Another case to this point is that we used to post card to celebrate the festival and show our affection, however, it’s a waste of natural resources and money. Thus, people invite ecards which is not only help to show actual love but also change social customs.  



However, despite the high technology has been adopted in a broad range, it haven’t determined social customs and ethics in the real sense. For instance, in china, people remain the custom of wishing somebody happy new year in spring festival. While in western country, people will never forget to put a pair of stockings on the end of kid’s bed before the Christmas. That’s the way that no matter how advanced the technology is will never be changed.  



For this reason, we can conclude that technology simply change to improve the way people deal with the social customs and ethics while the real thing determines them is people’s concept of customs. In the past time, humans didn’t have much high technology to enrich their lives, but they still develops many social customs in order to celebrate the festival or memorize the death people, nowadays，high technology has been introduced into the modern society, people have more opportunity to change the old customs, but they doesn’t. They choose to respect the tradition and make use of the technology to maintain the social customs just because they want to protect the legacy the ancient left.



To draw a conclusion, that is people who determine the social customs and ethics rather than the technologies, and the latter would play an important role in improving the performing form of customs and ethics.
