TOPIC: ISSUE221 - "The chief benefit of the study of history is to break down the illusion that people in one period of time are significantly different from people who lived at any other time in history."


Along with the opening of the history book, a panorama of life in past including every aspects of humanity society stand out. It could amazingly provided us different scenario of our precedents' life while show us similar share of different periods.

It is hard to deny that one period of time is quite different from other periods when it comes to science, art, as well as literature, which render people in that time specific culture and environment and make them distinct. Let us cast a look back at the history of scienc, where we may find that the whole process of scientific progress relies on restless innovation and breakthrough. Since people usually investigate in science in order to improve the efficiency and get a higher level of life than before, in scientific field there are full of inventions and promotion which are quite different from other periods.
People in ancient China use pieces of wood and bamboo to record while we nowadays instead these instrument to paper and digital production such as computer, video and radio; Gothic style of architecture were prevalent in ancient Italy while nowadays skyscraper fulfill streets; Pleasants in past went to saw seeds by hand while today farms only need to drive their truck even their private plane to accomplish various work.

It is just through these difference of distinct periods in history, we get great number of benefit as step stones to promote and improve our life since the experience no matter of failures or success all play as guide for progress.

However, apart from a host of different substances in people in distinct periods in history, great similarity comes immediately to our mind as well. It is especially true when it comes to certain basic values and principles people hold. No matter people living in ancient Egypt, the threshold period of America or modern time, honesty, tolerance, fairness and intelligence are all adornment and preference character of people. Consider the Second World War for example. In order to diminish the evil played by Nazi, which bring deep disaster to numerous innocent people, the strong force formed by united effort all over the world and stroked Nazi effective. Similarly, we today unite many countries military forces to fight against terrorists, which bring about disastrous consequences to peaceful society around the world. Through out the history of business, people always struggle to establish fair system to ensure smoothness of business process, which is considered as a key point in trading. Ancient people admire honesty people while no matter among employees or leaders, today’s people still envision honesty as the essential feature.

These similarities in distinct period people’s life also provide great benefit to human as they remind us by experience that what is important and critical in life and offer us excellent criterion in certain areas to make judgment nowadays. Additionally, as for these treasures’ great function in warning, we can prevent our self in repeating false in future as we hold roughly same principles and fundamental values of life, though specific targets we encountered may be different.

We must thank to various benefits we get from history study since it could not only inform us different scenes of life in distinct periods, which offer experience and step stones for people’s progress, but also treasures in life on similar values and basic values, which largely guide our way in dealing complicate problems today by lessons got by precedents in similar trouble they had faced of. In short, the study of distinction and similarity of people in different periods are of same great importance for one period people.
