I strongly disagree with the speaker on the assertion that the study of history is valuable only to the extent relevant to our daily life. In my opinion, history leads our sight to the past, helps us learn today’s world and provides us with precious materials for planning our future. The value of history is certainly beyond the effect on our daily lives.
By studying the past, we could know why the world becomes what it is like today. During the whole time of the development of humans’ society, we have always been curious about where we come from and why we become what we are today. F. Bacon, a famous English philosopher, said” Histories make men wise.” Indeed, mankind has solved many puzzles by studying the history. If C.R. Darwin hadn’t study the history of the course of evolution, could he tell us how lives evolve step by step? If physicists didn’t know the history of the big bang, would they work out the riddle of the universe? Absolutely wouldn’t. Besides, the contents of history is various and colorful, relevant with politics, business, education and so forth, which can enrich our spirit and makes the world more vivid and multiple. Therefore, the study of history is valuable in many aspects, broadening people’s vision and knowledge, which has great value that is not limited in our daily lives.
History can not only tells us WHY but also tells us HOW. Lessons and experiences provided by the ordinary people lead us to make right decision and prevent us from doing wrong things, which is reflected in many fields. For example, in the old days, mankind abused the resources of the nature and made bad effects on the environment we depend on, which brought about today’s severe changes of the climate such as the greenhouse effect that have serious threats to all the lives on the earth. By studying the changes of the environment in the past, people get the lessons and realize the importance of preventing the environment from becoming worse, then find many methods to protect the earth and to use resources effectively. Consider that, if economists didn’t study the past but just focused on the present situations, it may be much more difficult for them to work out the solution of the environment pollution and the lack of resources.
Just as the famous lady Soong May-ling said, “If the past has taught us anything, it is that every cause brings effect, every action has a consequence.” Every affair has its rules and history can tell us the inherent laws of the universe. By studying of the history, we can predict what the world will be like in the future, and which conduct us to face for the challenges in the corner. This is effective in the every aspects of the society, including economic, politics, science, cultures and so on, far beyond the extent of our daily lives.
Overall, the speaker’s position that the study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives is one-sided. I believe that history’s value is incarnated in many fields. Only if the value of the history be utilized more sufficiently, can we deal with the difficulties better in the future. |
