TOPIC: ARGUMENT188 - A new report suggests that men and women experience pain very differently from one another, and that doctors should consider these differences when prescribing pain medications. When researchers administered the same dosage of kappa opioids-a painkiller-to 28 men and 20 women who were having their wisdom teeth extracted, the women reported feeling much less pain than the men, and the easing of pain lasted considerably longer in women. This research suggests that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required, whereas men should be given other kinds of pain medication. In addition, researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medications on men versus women.

The argument is well-organized, but not well-reasoned. The arguer concludes that man and woman should be prescribed respectively differently in terms of kappa opioids and should research the difference of all medication on man and woman. To support the conclusion he cites the result of a study on man and woman with kappa opioids and some detail information. In the seemly logical argument, there are some flaws weakening the validation and credibility.

First of all, there is no evidence supporting the faithfulness of the research of man and woman with kappa opioids. As the arguer doesn't give any information about what institution or who conducts the research, the result that man and woman experience pain differently is suspect. Conceded the fidelity of the study, does it select all the objects at random? How old are they and what occupation are they? All these factors may influence the result. What's more, the number of the objects, 28 men and 20 women, could not be regarded as the same basic condition, as less people result in less variance. And, what if the pain killer kappa opioids matters the result? What if other pain killer may have the same effect on both man and woman? So the result of the study is doubtable.

Secondly, granted the study is well-conducted and thereby the result is credible, the assumption that kappa opioids have effect to all the pain of all women still have no fundament. In the argument, the only detail about kappa opioids is that it is a painkiller, but what kind of pain killer? If kappa opioids could only be used to solve teeth pain, then prescribing it to any pain medication is irresponsible and useless. And, do all women can take this medicine? Does it have any side-effects? If a pregnant woman have a pain in her teeth, and kappa opioids has side-effects on both this woman and her child, then obviously prescribing other pain killers which has less side-effects would be a better choice. Therefore, the suggestion that kappa opioids should be prescribed for women whenever pain medication is required has no evidence.

Thirdly, there is no well-established fact to support the assumption that men should be given other kinds of pain medication. As no evidences to prove that the study is true, the suggestion drawn from it is also unbelievable. Conceded the conclusion of the study is believable, in the study there is no fact showing that kappa opioids has no effect on man or man should take other medicines. If taking more dosage of kappa opioids may have the same effect with woman or even better, taking kappa opioids could be adopted to man's pain medication. Even if kappa opioids have less significant effect on teeth pain, it may cure other pain of the body, such as cut pain or headache.

Fourthly, the conclusion that researchers should reevaluate the effects of all medication on men versus women is also lack of evidences. Granted the research is believable, it suggests that pain is experienced differently in women and men, while here the arguer suggests the reevaluate of medication which has nothing to do with the study concerning on the pain experience. And granted that it is kappa opioids that makes the difference on man and woman, it doesn’t necessarily indicates that all the medicine is different to man and woman.

In sum, the arguer still need more statistics and analysis on the medicine and man and woman, such as the medicine dosage, the medication time and comparative study on other pain killers and so on, thus can the arguer draw a conclusion.
