TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company.

"In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."


The argument is well-formed, but not well-reasoned. The arguer suggests that Fancy Toy Company should hire Rosa Winnings to take place of Pat Salvo. To support his opinion, arguer gives some information about the two person's performance in companies，and believe that Rosa, though the Toy Company have to pay twice salary, is bound to lead the company to make a great profit. Yet, the arguer leaves some flaws in the argument lending no solid and persuasive support.

At the beginning, the assumption that Pat Salvo leads to the decline in the profit of Fancy Toy Company in the last three quarters is unreasonable. Though the leadership of Pat as a president is critical to company, there are many other irresistible factors that may contribute to the fallen profit, such as the macro economy depression, the toy market shrink and so forth. Conceded that Pat Salvo is responsible to the profit decrease, without the details about the performance before the three quarters and Pat's general evaluation, still the arguer cannot draw that conclusion that Pat is not be able to make a change in the future and thereby should be give a severance.

Besides the flaws about Pat, the arguer also lacks evidence to prove that Rosa Winnings is the reason leading Starlight Jewelry to make a profit. Though it is the fact that during Rosa's term Starlight Jewelry goes up, many other factors may be the real fundamental cause, such as the rising of jewelry market so all the jewelry companies make progresses, the reputation gained by the former presidents for Starlight Jewelry so Rosa needs no great effort and special ability but still can make a profit. As the arguer fails to give detail information about Rosa's achievements during her incumbency, one can easily to suspect Rosa's capability.

Furthermore, conceded that Rosa plays an important role in Starlight Jewelry in last few years, still the assumption that Rosa is able to run a toy company and make an increase profit is unwarranted. As jewelry company and toy company has totally different market, consumers and therefore needs different insight to market, strategy to sell and propaganda, though Rosa makes a success in jewelry company, it is doubtable that whether she can adjust to a different field.

In sum, lacking enough evidences and facts, the arguer hastily makes the conclusion that Rosa is able to make a profit for Fancy Toy Company while Pat should be give a severance. The arguer still needs more details about their capability of management, marketing and specifics to make the important choice.
