American literatureLiterature:
Mark Twain

.

Today we are going todiscuss
the life of Mark Twain . do. Do you know who he is? Yes ,everyone

Yeah. Everyone has heard about him. ! He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, didn't he? right.

Right.

Well, I don't know all the books, but. But he was a newspaper reporter, and he wrote different things like historical fiction, travel bookbooks, religious fiction and short stories, right?

And ,that is...? That's it? Ok,well, you are OK. Well you're about to learn some more things that are less talktalked about. Did you know he was a thorn in USthe U.S. government side? suprised well Surprised? Well, Mark Twain was his pen name ,; he was actually born Samuel Clemens. And, today you are going to learn about Mark Twain, and his activities in the anti-empieral league.really?he Anti-Imperial League.

Really? He was friendfriends with Roosevelt and other politicians, and write. I read about it.

Oh, he was a rebel, a rivalrebel with a eht cause. He more than belongbelonged to the league,League; he was the vice president from1901 to Vice President from 1901-1910.let usLet's start at the beginning . the league. The League was the first of its kind in the USU.S. and was formed in reaction to the outcome of the Spanish AMerican-American war in 1898 . basically spain. Basically, Spain turned over colonies in the caribbeanCaribbean and pacific inPacific to the US ,U.S. as the loser in the a  settlement. It was called treaty"The Treaty of paris. Paris". It named cuba, guaCuba, Guam, Puerto Rico and Filipina. Philippines. Twain supportsupported the USU.S. in the beginning ,but did a turn -about -face when he learned about the terms of the treaty. He believebelieved it was just awaya way for USU.S. expansion ..

Twain was in EUROPEEurope at the time of the Spanish-American war and returnreturned to the USU.S. in 1900.he He was always ready to tell how he felt about the treaty. He campion the fearsly campaigned fiercely against imperialism by making speeches , writing articles and after sending "A Salutation Speech from the Nineteenth Century to the Twentieth Century" to the League as well as the New York Herald, he became the vice presidentVice President of the league. League. In tnea nutshell, he believed UScouldthat the U.S. could not bube both an empire and a republic at the same time.twain Twain admired EMILIO AGUINALDOEmilio Aguinaldo tremendously, and what he was all about.

Who was he? He

Well, he was a philopino reble.Filipino rebel. He wanted freedom for his country . he. He organized rebellions against the Spanish ,itand was exiled theby them to Hong kongKong before the war. when When the war started ,, he went back to the filopin,USPhilippines thinking the U.S. was going to help free the filopin. Philippines. Wrong ,! I do notdon't think he realized that eht USthe U.S. wanted the philopinesPhilippines for its own. In the end , the USU.S. kept the philopines. Philippines.

The US critisideU.S. criticized the Spanish for having concentration camps in cubaCuba and useused it as propaganda against them. They may Then they turned around and did the same thing ,- open concentration camps in the Philippines. this This is with thewhat got on twain’sTwain's nerves.

Anyway, Twain was thoroughly displeased by the whole thing. When he went back to the US in 1901,he publish to the person sitting U.S. in 1901, he published To the darkness. Person Sitting in the Darkness. This had a great impact on the war and government’sthe government's dishonesty. It came to bu leaguebe the League's most popular publication. That’s the same year ,he did it again angand signed a julyJuly 4th address toTo the American people. People. This was published in newspapernewspapers everywhere and did not make politicianpoliticians happy.

In 1902 ,, he sent the signed a petition to the and makeSenater that made it clear ,that he knowknew all about concentration camp ,camps, and that he was against them. He thought it might helpshelp stop the hostile
US P hilippine
U.S. - Philippine negotiations. InAnd in 1903 ,twain, Twain was active in helping league protese ,the League protest how they treat Filipino’streated Filipino's in their own country. Does that surprise you about twain? Twain? He was involved with antiimperial leaguethe Anti-Imperial League until he his death in 1910. There was a lot more to twainTwain than tom …and…. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
