It is primarily through formal education that a culture tries to perpetuate the ideas it favors and discredit the ideas it fears.
Nowadays the function and effectiveness of formal education is under fierce discussion. Some socialists insist that it is the primary proposal for a culture to perpetuate its specific value system through education, while the others hold opinions that it is far from enough to depend only on education to realize this purpose. As far as I am concerned, I tend to agree with the latter idea.
Admittedly, traditional education, as an important part of most people’s lives, plays a crucial role in the identification of social conventions for those people. Not only be places to study academic knowledge, colleges, universities and other schools are also providers of various classes of moral and legal information. Students can have a clear figure about what the social favors and what it fears in these educational places. For example, they will know that obeying rules, being honest and hardworking are good, while cheating, being vanish and lazy are bad. Obviously they will continue to practice in their daily lives as they are taught in school. Then, as a result, the social conventions are kept since those students are the future of their nations. Furthermore, they will try to perpetuate this value system to next generation, which means that the use of education is extraordinarily successful. A survey conducted by CYC (Chinese Young Commitment) in 1990 also supports my view, as about 87% respondents of this survey attribute their ideas of good and evil to the result of formal education in schools. Meanwhile, 90% parents say they will by the same way foster their children, from which we can see it is really effective for a society to use education as a tool.
However, the satisfied data mentioned above can only represent situation ten years before. As the world develops increasingly rapid, growing problems of education accompanied appears. Young people now are far more independent in mind than their ancestors. They have more own ideas to judge whether a phenomenon is positive or negative and would rather act against the social conventions than conform to them. A typical and somewhat extreme example is taking drugs. As I myself is a college student, I know that being addicted in drugs now in campus is not a shame but, to some degree, an honor to some adolescents. Pursuing for liberation from daily rules and restrictions by the family and school, they are eager to taste things not favored by the society in order to decide by themselves. In this case, education is no longer an ideal way for society to hold its criteria as the more it emphasizes, the more those young people want to topple it.
Moreover, there is not only one way to achieve the goal of maintain formal standards. Although the development brings several new puzzles to educators, great technology nowadays may help a lot to the issue. Since new channels as Internet web, TV program and so forth are provided for students to touch more about the outside world, they can receive related information about the criteria of right and wrong made by the society. Consequently, people may have equal possibility to be educated even outside formal educational places. However, this assumption needs careful preparation and long-term concern because they may be at the same time used to mislead children by criminal people.
Generally speaking, formal education is still a useful way to perpetuate the social standards now, but other factors are in need to be considered too. People had better focus on the education of children not only in school but also at home and other places so as to make a more satisfied result.
