Argument 145
A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person—often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed—and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.

Before we ask all people who snore having a diet and going to the gym, we should take a look at the argument in different angles. The author seems to assume that it is the snore that make people gaining weight without examining other factors that may contribute to the obesity.

Firstly, no information about the study has been provided by the author. How many people have been involved in the study and what are the situation of these people? If the sample is too small and only restrict to particular people, for example fat people who also snore and thin people who do not snore, the result may be only attribute to those particular individual. And is the study long enough? Is it possible the study is too short that people who do not snore may gain weight after the study. In addition, are there other factors that may affect the result of the study? Are the food provided to people who snore and people who do not snore the same? Do they do the same job in day time? The result would be more convincing if factors such as those can be provided by the author.

Even if the result is acceptable, the argument remains questionable. The author assumes that it is snore may cause sleep apnea which may not necessarily the case, because the assumption is based on the common sense which has not been proved by scientific evidence. Further, even if sleep apnea indeed exist, there is no evidence to prove that sleep apnea can weak people. Can it wake a person when it is "so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed"? and even if the person indeed be waken up, it do not necessarily means that he or she will feel tired. Maybe a person will not feel a thing because the waking is unnoticed, and can not affect people's daily life. Or it may even make people more energetic because several shot sleep may be better than a continuous long sleep.

Finally, the author fails to rule out other alternative method to keep fit. Even if snoring people tend to gain weight easier than normal people, do they have to keep fit by having a diet and going to the gym? Why cannot they just go to the doctor and have some pills so that they can stop snoring? And even if there is no pills for snoring, do they have to both eat less and exercise more? Can they just eat less but do not exercise or the opposite? Or is there other ways to keep fit such as sleep less or keep a happy mood? We just do not know.

In conclusion, the argument can be more convincing if more comprehensive investigation is provided. It can be further improved by taking into account other factors that may affected the people's weight.
