25. Anyone can make things bigger and more complex. What requires real effort and courage is to move in the opposite direction—in other words, to make things as simple as possible.
As the speaker said, it is easy for anyone to follow his inclination and neglect the proper method to make things bigger and more complex which, in my observation, contributes to no good things but making problem more difficult to understand, explain and solve. However, what serves as the right practice, as far as I concerned, is the opposite-to simplify to a proper degree.
Simplification is so crucial that it deserves our more effort. In fact, to simplify is an essential process for humans to learn and understand the laws and ideas existed in our world. In retrospect, almost all kinds of science develop in the approach utilizing the simple technology to generate the complex, the well-understood theory to demonstrate the unknown one, the basic phenomena to explain the advanced. It is those simplest theories that A Brief History of Time written by Stephen William Hawking employed to explain the most complex phenomenon to the world.
Simplification is so tough as to require our courage indeed. Things become complex with the explosive growth of knowledge and gradually improvement of technology. As the knowledge and experiences are accumulated boldly, humans seem to have more references to help us pick the right choices, however it lead humans to a negative direction, reckoning the given and the lost excessively. Over-thinking may lead to passion lost and courage faded. Further more, although we endeavor to make everything more convenience and simpler, our society has a natural tendency to complicate everything. The complicating personal life can present this strong trend well. The more kinds of food are provided, the more difficulty we have to pick; the greater mobile we are, the greater our number of destinations we have to reach each day; the more comfortable conditions we have, the greater probability we have insomnia and the more facilities we get, the more trifles await us to address. It is hard to ‘betray’ tendency and break inertia, thus certain courage is demanded in this situation.
However, without basic principle, simplification can bog us down in the adversity and even result in huge damages. No one wants to live in an over-simplified house. If a designer expect to reduce the cost in the way diminish necessary materials and simplify the building processes, probably he has to spend the rest time of his life in the asylum, the prison or the complexity of both. Further, over simplification is dangerous in terms of the truth of knowledge, it is only when we have sufficient pieces of mosaic that we can see that they may revive its original outlook.
In sum, we must try to make things simple with our real effort and courage, at the same time we should be circumspect about the principle to accomplish it, and keep away with blindness.
