Many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. The governments of countries in which these languages are spoken should act to prevent such languages from becoming extinct.
------------------------------------
What is the correct attitude on the increasing disappearance of lesser-known languages? The speaker asserts that the governments of countries where these languages are spoken should act to protect them. I fundamentally agree this opinion as reasons advocated as following.
First of all, those languages which are not spoken by the major people are also an important part for culture of the countries where they exist. Any language in a country, no matter how less people are speaking, represents the culture background of its speakers in the country, which is still a organic aspect in culture. What is more, even if this language stands on a minor place, it still always provides us vivid evidences to study the major country culture. Take Miao language for an example: This language, which is spoken among the few Miao people in south China, has been proved by Chinese linguists that it is the ancient language for Kejia language, which is a primary language in that area. And many experts are studying Miao language for the progress of Chinese dialect. This example illustrates the lesser-known languages still has significant effect in culture study.
At the second place, considering the evolution of languages, those minority languages are also supposed to be protected in an effective way. The cultures of human beings are complex and various. One of the basal of culture is language. Many modern languages present their current shapes during thousands of years' process. Until now, the languages are still developing in order to meet modern society's need. While one of main element for language development is mixing other languages' elite. Modern English is extraordinarily different from old English five hundred years ago because it has absorbed various grammars, words from many other languages, including those less known ones. Image that one day all the other small-scope languages had disappeared and only one or two languages were left, what a tragic thing for language progess and people's lives. In short, those minor languages should still play an essential part in language progress and not disappear.
Admittedly, according to the principle of language history, it is inevitable that some languages would disappear slowly because of natural factors. On this case, we can hold a natural attitude for this natural phenomenon. However, based on the latest report provided by United Nations, the most current dangerous threat to lesser-known languages are extreme influenced brought by the major languages. In order to save them, some policies, such as setting relevant courses on those languages, strengthening relational study and so on should be made and begun to carry out.
Consequently, upon the critical analysis advocated and examples suggested, we can arrive at the conclusion that lesser-known languages should be protected effectively by the relevant governments, because we must realize that to protect those languages is to protect our culture. |
