So much is new and complex today that looking back for an understanding of the past provides little guidance for living in the present.

Although the current world, compared with the past, is very new and complex, in my opinion, an understanding of the past still provide us a lot of guidance for living in the present.

First of all, the present is based on the past. The present and the past are two comparable conceptions, in other words the are different parts of the spectrum of the time. In fact, the past is the original of the the present, which means the present develops from the past. Consequently, the past is a mirror of the present. People can gain a lot from history. For example, in the realm of science, the later theory is usually based on the axioms of the previous scientists. Einstein's light and electricity theory is based on Plank's Quantum. Also the explanation, presented by Steven Hawking, of the universal uses the theory of Relativity of Einstein. Without the contribution of Plank and Einstein, the significant theory of Hawking cannot be realized and achieved. The later scientist can quote their previous counterparts' devotions into their work. By doing so, they can not only save a lot of time but also may accomplish magnificent achievements. Thus, the present can attain a lot from the past.

Furthermore, the present can prevent making similar mistakes by analyzing the past. Learning the history, we can understand the reasons and sources of some errors and mistakes, then we may get rid of them in the present so as to provide a better life for the current people. The development of criminal law presents us a vivid instance. In the past, people considered the criminal law as a means of revenge. At the moment, people tried to kill others through criminal law. Nevertheless, in the present civilization society, the criminal law experts suggest that death penalty should be abandoned. Because the principle of the law is try to prevent people from making similar mistakes and provide them another chance to have a better life. In this case, the death penalty is too crual for people and bans their right to live. Consequently, nowadays more and more countries begin to abolish death penalty. Therefore, the present can prevent similar mistakes by the guidance of the past.

Admittedly, the past are not able to provide all the guidance for the present problems. The current world are faced with a number of new issues, which have never happened in the past. In this case, the past is lacking in essential information for the present. For instance, the cloning is a universal issue in the present, which is a new science realm that came into existence in the late of twentieth century. The present cannot attain any guidance from the past to solve this problem. However, it does not mean the present will be aimless before the problem. Actually, countries all over the world are against the cloning of human being. Because they all agree on the same idea that colong human being contravenes the ethics accepted by all the people. Hence, in some cases the past fails to provide us enough guidance for the present.

To sum up, we can obtain a lot guidance from the past so as to accomplish more in many realms in the present and prevent making similar mistakes of the past. However, when confronting the newly established realm, we are not able to attain much information from the past.
