I strongly agree with the speaker’s statement that by studying any academic discipline we can change the way of perceiving the world. Without academic knowledge, we just see our world in a narrow way which depends on subjective emotions but neglects the essential of the world. Then after studying the discipline, we see the same world as before, but with different eyes.

To begin with, as a natural organism in the world, it is necessary to reveal the essential of the world. Without correlative knowledge, our ancestors just saw the world in a static way, and had the wrong thought that the subjective consciousness of human being is forehead the material world. The wrong idea chains our forefather for thousands of years. Nowadays, we can tell ourselves that the material world has come into being for million years which is earlier than our minds, and we also know that we should see our world in a developing way, all those knowledge come from philosophy which teaches us real methodologies to recognize the physical world. Through the philosophy, we form the true world view. You can imagine that without the right methodologies to perceive the world, we still immerge in the wrong view.

Secondly, through out the earnest study of knowledge, especially in history and literary, we reveal the human nature which involves not only goodness, honesty but also characteristic flaws and foibles from the characters we read about. In so far as history, we can see that demagogues whom society places on pedestals always descend for the reason that they impulse by money, power and status, all those come from their characteristic flaws, such as jealousy, prejudice etc. When it comes to literary, the father of tragedies-Shakespeare comes to my mind. Any one who has read the works King Lear and Hamlet seriously will notice that the heightened awareness of the tragically flawed ironic hero, and the arbitrariness by which we distinguish our heroes from our villains.

Thirdly, through the academic discipline, we also can learn cultures around the world in different eyes. Without the special knowledge about culture, we might think culture superficial, naturally contribute the culture as a simple social phenomenon. But a student who majors in culture or sociology will establish a relationship between external phenomenon such as ritual, ceremony, costume etc. and social essential. They can understand that every cultural is passes down from one generation to another, after modifying by different generations, then it shows us in its own single way, then we can interpret the belief of the nation and worth view through this single way.

With those systematical disciplines, we will change the way of preserving the world, then the change trends us interact with the world in a better form. When we understand the essential of the world or in another word, recognize ourselves more clearly, we can make better use of resource-god has presented to us, and develop the world more efficiently.

To sum up no matter philosophy, history, literature or culture, all those academic knowledge can help us see the real world in a new vision. When we acquire the disciplines, a new systematical understanding of the world will come into being, which directs us to see the world in  different eyes.
